Port Isla - Ready For The Fight

Port Isla A.L.I.V.E EP

Port Isla, an up and coming four piece from Norwich have just released their third EP titled A.L.I.V.E.

I first heard of Port Isla last year when I saw them supporting George Ezra, and I was lucky enough to be front row. A band that you've never heard of coming on stage and completely blowing you away is always lovely, and Port Isla managed to do that to me.

Fast forward a year, their music has made itself at home in my music library so I was happy to hear about the release of some new songs.

First up on the EP we have A.L.I.V.E which - to me - is about the kind of relationship that makes you feel, you guessed it, alive. The melody and the music blend together perfectly to portray the excitement and the rush of being with someone who you have fallen for so quickly, and much the opposite to a love song ballad, it is a very fun song. The bridge calms it down a bit, bringing us back down to Earth for a few moments before jumping into an instrumental and returning to the chorus. This is where I can imagine a montage of two lovers on a date at a fairground.

Next up, Ready For The Fight is about not backing down and fighting for what you love. This one is a little less fun and excitement, and a bit more serious and about proving oneself. Serious, but still amazing. 

Penny Red is the penultimate song on the EP, and my favourite. It is more of a sad song than the others, I see a woman and a man who are in love but are not together. The harmonies in the chorus got me feeling some type of way, and makes me feel the emotion of the people they sing about.

Lastly, slowing it right down and leaving the EP on a very relaxing note, we have Raleigh, has no lyrics, just music and sound which is one of those perfect songs that you need when you're trying to calm down before going to sleep.

Overall I'd say they've done a pretty good job with the track listing, as they have done with their two previous EPs, The Steamroller EP and In The Long Run EP. Keeping it varied but still keeping a distinct sound is what I enjoy in an artist and I think Port Isla do that very well.
