What's a dog trainer's secret to tiring two puppies out? Make them run! Even better if it's through play or training at the same time. A puppy is constantly learning and in this video the dogs are learning a number of different things. Can you spot them? By running away, I am initiating play and getting the dogs to willingly follow and play with me, this is reinforcing their focus on me as well as teaching them that following me or coming to me is FUN! And they are rewarded for that with tug. They are learning to play and share toys together and Greta is much younger than Scout so you can also see her learning to coordinate her body better as she follows along (I love when she slides into Scout and neither of them seem phased). I am teaching them tug and chase, a very useful game for self control and general play. At one point I reach to pet Greta a little while she is tugging, getting her used to touch when excited and during play. At the end I hold the toy and wait for the puppies to be calm again before continuing play (the video cuts here). This reinforces/teaches self control which many dogs lack these days (I'm sure you're nodding and thinking of a dog right now that could use some self control) and rewards then dogs for being calm for what they want (more play). So... how many lessons is that?
