KING IN THE NORTH
Chapter 1
“Aya! Hey, wake up! Our trainer’s here!” Lisa called out to me.
Yes, my name is Aya, and I work in an office. Right now, we’re in training for a new product account. I’m part of a customer service company, and our trainer? Mr. Rui Orcas. He’s smart, kind-hearted, and effortlessly cool. Honestly… I really, really like him.
“Aya, can you read the next slide please? Hello? Aya?” Lisa elbowed me again and whispered, “Aya! Mr. Rui is talking to you!”
I froze. “Oh—yes, sorry!” I stammered. Mr. Rui chuckled and asked, “Are you okay? Were you daydreaming?”
At that moment, I wished the ground would just swallow me whole. Aggh!!
Sorry, Mr. Orcas, I was just lost in thought. Something a bit too personal. Yes, I’ll read the next slide.”
Mr. Orcas smiled at me—his eyes and smile carrying a gentle warmth.
After work, Lisa and I decided to check out a newly opened cafeteria nearby. It’s a library-themed café where you can sip coffee, enjoy cakes, and browse old books. For someone like me who loves both coffee and reading, it felt like a must-visit spot.
When we arrived at the café, fittingly named Coffee and Books, a sudden chill ran through me, goosebumps rising on my skin. A kind young lady greeted us and took our orders. I asked for my usual—hot Americano with one Splenda and a slice of cheesecake—while Lisa went for her go-to Frappuccino and donut.
While waiting, we wandered among the shelves. I drifted toward the farthest corner, where the oldest books with worn, intriguing covers were kept. One in particular caught my eye: bound in black leather with gray trim. The first page was a blank sheet of deep black, but the second revealed its title—King in the North. As I began to read, a cold wind brushed against my face.
On the third page, the words appeared: The King Ru. A powerful, cold-blooded ruler. He conquered countless wars and claimed nearby countries.
I traced the name King Ru with my fingertips. Somehow, it felt familiar—like I knew him, like I missed him. I couldn’t quite place it, but there was something stirring inside me that I couldn’t explain.
I turned to the young lady and asked, “Hey… is this book for sale, or maybe for rent?” Her expression darkened as she replied, “You need to hand that book back. It’s not meant for everyone.”
A pang of sadness hit me. I promised her I’d return it later, but when Lisa and I sat back down, I clutched the book like it was my lifeline. I couldn’t let it go.
Lisa leaned in. “Aya, give it to her.”
“What?” I whispered.
“The book. Aya, hand it over.”
I bit my lip. “No. I’ll keep it—for now. I’ll return it once I finish reading.”
Lisa sighed, exasperated. “OMG, Aya. What the hell…”
Thirty minutes later, we stood up and headed for the exit. The young lady didn’t notice us—she was busy helping other customers. I slipped out with the book in my hands.
Little did I know… that choice was the greatest mistake of my life. A single act that would turn my world a full 365 degrees.
Like..heh okay yes yell at me raise ur voice it makes me turned on

The mahogany door banged against the richly painted walls, the sound of the loud bang coursed throughout the prim office, creating an exhausted expression on Bruce’s chiselled face. He leaned back into the soft leather, releasing an exasperated sigh as he braced himself for the angry minion marching into his office.
“Father!-“
“Damien wait”, Bruce held up his rough scarred hand, Damien stared in confusion and irritation as Bruce brought a pristine mug to his lips, tilting it forward, letting the rich espresso glide down his tongue, causing a bitter sensation yet warm sensation to fill his mouth.
“Are you done?”, Damien’s voice cut through the sound of liquid moving about, his brow raising while his eyes shot a look of annoyance at Bruce.
“What do you need Damien?”, Bruce asked while his eyes tracked scattered papers on his desk.
“I’m here to question you on your not so wise decisions as of late” Bruce’s eyes looked up from the papers to stare at the young teen.
“Get to the point”
Damien narrowed his eyes at Bruce’s large figure as he trailed around the desk. “Am i to presume you are unaware of the stupid quarrels rising between 2 of your sons because your irresponsibility”
Bruce sat up straight, shoulders tightened, cold blue orbs now glaring at his son as his patience ran thinner. Damien’s cold anger never dissipated, still simmering under his annoyed expression.
“You allowed Drake to handle a threat to our identities, to our family and now Drake and Dick are fighting over that threat”
Bruce stilled for a moment; his eyes slightly widened as his mind processed the information. Damien silently awaited a response when Bruce abruptly shot up from the extravagant chair, stalking his way out of the office as Damien hurriedly followed behind him.
The harsh cool glow from the screen further irritated the young detective’s eyes, deep shadowy circles embedded under his eyes which he desperately tried to keep open. One of his hands rapidly moved a mouse while the other pressed against the side of his head as a gnawing pain resonated throughout his skull.
His hand stopped abusing his hair for a second as he outstretched it to grab the mug full of a dark bitter liquid, when his eyes caught the notification sitting at the top of his phone’s screen.
It was a text from Bruce.
His brows furrowed.
Quiet footsteps padded down the extravagantly decorated hallway, Tim’s eyes barely stayed open as he inched nearer to one of the many Parlor rooms inside the Manor, a cacophony of voices echoing out of that room.
The rambunctious sound seemed to dim as the sleep deprived figure entered the room, 4 sets of eyes all turning to look in his direction.
“It seems the root of the problem finally decided to show up showed up”, the snarky voice of the youngest Wayne remarked.
Tim wore a confused expression (What the fuck did I do?), “What-“
“You were given a small mission which you still haven’t completed, on top of that you allowed it to spiral to this degree”, Bruce’s commanding voice cut through Tim, his eyes glaring holes into him.
Bruce pivoted his head to look at his eldest, “And you, I thought you were responsible, mature but no you decide to throw yourself at a civilian and fight with your own brother over her”
“At a threat, these bubbling fools threw themselves at a threat”, Damien commented, his voice heavy and resolute.
“Quick question, I know these nitwits are here to get scolded by daddy dearest, but why do I have to tune in as well?”, Jason quipped from the sofa where his body was lounging, one arm laying limp over the backrest.
“Well father considers you as an esteemed member of the Waynes, I see you more as family dog”, Damien replied with a snarky tone.
“You mother fuck-“, Jason moved to lunge at the child assassin standing in a defensive stance but was blocked by Bruce’s muscular arm pushing him back into the plush sofa.
“Enough”, a dark shadow had covered Bruce’s eyes, frustration practically radiating off his body in huge waves.
His large figure turned to Tim, eyes glaring through him “You couldn’t handle a small job and turned it into this fiasco. I thought you were smart enough yet once again you let me down”. Bruce turned again, now digging holes into Dick who remained silent the entire time.
“You have your own vigilante identity, your own city to protect yet you still act so foolishly, I don’t understand why your decisions are so childish”. Dick had his head hung low, still refusing to utter a word into existence.
Bruce let out an exasperated sigh while running his hand over his raven hair before turning back to Tim. “You will invite this girl to our house”
Damien’s head snapped up. “What?! Father- “
“He will. Since you can’t decide if this girl is a threat or not because of your love blindness, ill have to take matters into my own hands”, Bruce gave one last cold glance at Tim before walking past him.
Tim’s face seemed incomprehensible as he slowly stalked back to his room, less like a child being grounded and more so resembling an adult who’s emotions are a scramble that cannot be deciphered.
Once inside the security of his room, Tim hurled a clay ornament at a wall, cracking it into several pieces that scattered across the floor. His body shook with an untameable fury, his hands finding their way around his hair, gripping tightly as he stared into the darkness of the floor.
After finally find someone that was his, he was already losing her. He can’t let this happen, but then again he can’t disobey Bruce. What if Bruce deems reader a threat and has her put in jail or silences her or-

Seeing his marks and being unable to respond... God I hate having to be gentle now. I want to write over his marks with my own. I want you to feel that soreness from me instead. I want to reclaim you. To mark you one last time. I want him to know you weren't always his. That I was here first. That you were mine once too.
