i wanna hear more stories about your haunted pc
okay, so it looks like it's possessed computer story time~
okay, so this was the first computer I owned that we used the internet on, way back in the dialup internet days. we had this thing for over half a dozen years too, which may have been a factor in it all.
I'm not really 100% sure when it all started, but about two or three years after we got it I found myself referring to the computer as May'ree, which I have no idea where that came from I was just alone one day talking out loud and called the computer May'ree (yeah, I talked to inanimate objects while alone sometimes, when you grow up sickly and get stuck inside often you develop odd habits). I think it was sometime around that time I noticed some odd little things, like the computer working better suddenly if I'd say little encouragements about how I know it can do better or getting more likely to have random things go wrong if I was angry and some of that anger got focused at the computer.
however, it was that time that I called it a "piece of shit" out of frustration those little things that could be dismissed rather easily suddenly seems a bit less normal. since I tried everything, from manually starting Windows Explorer after it crashed to multiple restarts using various little tricks to try and get it to start up right again. we were literally thinking it was either going to have to get taken in to be fixed or replaced when out of desperation I apologized for calling it a piece of shit like I did the moment before Windows Explorer crashed on me and hit the power button one more time. worked perfect.
and that was only the FIRST time something like that happened. after that I'd try a simple restart just because (always finding Windows Explorer wouldn't boot up) and then shut it back down and apologize to it the few other times after it did the same thing when I got frustrated with how slow it was getting (especially compared to newer computers) and insulted it. the most amusing time that happened was when my friend Crash came over and actually saw it happen. getting asked why you just apologized to your computer is kind of awkward, but her reaction when I told her this wasn't an isolated event was amusing as she kind of backed away from the computer slowly and never came near it again.
also, like I mentioned, there was the time a new agey friend of mine was talking with me and asked if I had someone by the computer with me because she sensed a second strong presence. fittingly enough that was one of the days the computer was being especially moody and I needed to sweet talk it constantly to keep it working.
but eventually we got a new computer and dad started using May'ree for solitaire, but I think it didn't like him since every time he gets frustrated with electronics he gets mad at them as if they have it out for him and about two months after he started being the main one using it, well, it refused to work at all. no one could figure out why either, it just stopped even turning on at all. I think it really disliked my dad and just decided it didn't want to work for him.
but ever since then I've pretty much named every single computer I've had myself, figuring the random naming itself thing is probably around the time it started and a lot of lore say names have power so I figured if that's true if I name the computer first that gives it some kind of protection. I think that actually works tho, because while I've had computers develop a bit of a "personality" since then it's all been much less drastic and fit with the names they were given.
