Did I get way too into this? Yes. Do I really care? Nope, it was a good time. More details below the cut!
Emory Mikalson had a rough childhood. Abandoned by her mother on the steps of a firehouse, Emory grew up in an orphanage, surrounded by kids vying for the attention adults who might possibly adopt them. Her first couple of years there were great, but once she turned six, things started going downhill. Sometimes when she was mad, fires would spontaneously start. Butterflies would swarm her room when she was excited. And when Tabitha Lane made fun of her… well, it’s something Emory’s tried to forget.
Soon enough, people started avoiding her. No one knew exactly what was wrong with her, just that she was off. The bright point of her time in the orphanage was meeting her best friend, Charlie. The two were as thick as thieves and he always kept Emory grounded and made her realize that she could be more than just the freak who scared people.
When the two of them finally aged out of the system, they got an apartment together in Evergreen Harbor. While Charlie pursued a degree in Communications, Emory aimed for a Fine Arts degree. Always a quick learner, she excelled- at least, until she hooked up with a frat boy and found out she was pregnant. Unable to afford both a baby and university, Em chose to drop out and pick up another job.
Boston was finally born and Emory couldn’t have been happier. She didn’t exactly expect to become a young mother, but it was nice to have someone to love unconditionally and she vowed to give her son the life she never had. And for two years, everything was fine. Charlie and Emory navigated being parents- Charlie was officially dubbed Boston’s honorary uncle- and working while pursuing their passions. Then, one day when Boston was throwing a tantrum, it started snowing. In the middle of summer. Inside the apartment. Emory immediately realized what she’d done: passed down whatever weirdness she had to her son.
Suddenly, whatever free time she had was dedicated to finding out what the hell was wrong with both her and Boston. She spent hours scouring the web and various forums, visiting the library and researching. One thing kept popping up: the town of Glimmerbrook. So, leaving Boston with Charlie for the weekend, she went to the mysterious town and began her search. The residents were cagey when she tried to talk to them, only making her more suspicious. And then one day she was following Darrel Charm when she saw him step through a portal. Our girl was shook. And then immediately decided to follow him through, which would be how Emory ended up in the magical realm, learning all about the world of witchcraft.
Long story short, Em ended up meeting the sages and talking to them about her experiences and learning that both she and Boston were likely spellcasters. She learned all about the different types of occults- werewolves are fucking real? Taylor Lautner is quaking- and that yes, magic was definitely real, and controlling it is possible, with the right teacher. Emory couldn’t believe that after all this time, she finally had a concrete answer to everything. She was a spellcaster. And that meant she had to learn how to use her magic so she could help teach Boston when he was old enough.
So when Emory heard about this “Sapphopalooza” and that one of the contestants was a witch, she was immediately intrigued. And it certainly helped that she was attractive, too. The idea of possibly being surrounded by so many occults was irresistible, especially if it meant learning more along the way. Emory was quick to tell Charlie about everything that had happened and hashed out the details with Charlie, who agreed that if she made it into the contest, he’d take care of Boston until she returned. So, now she’s just hoping and praying to get accepted. She’ll do anything to learn about her magic for Boston and if she happens to fall for either of the girls along the way and they can accept her son? Well, she wouldn’t be too opposed.
And for some fun facts!
Emory is like… annoyingly determined and stubborn. After a childhood of hiding and catering to everyone’s whims, she realized she didn’t want to be a people-pleaser for the rest of her life, especially to people who didn’t care about her.
Since no one knows when her birthday is, her official birthday is the day she was brought to the orphanage. But she personally thinks of her birthday as being the day she met Charlie since he was the best present she’s ever gotten. Besides Boston, of course.
Her favorite color is blue.
She’s in love with the song ‘Waking Up The Giants’ by Grizfolk.
When she finally left the orphanage, the first thing she did was go to the lake and swim for hours. They’d never been allowed to because ‘it’s unsanitary and a health risk’ but it was totally just because the adults didn’t want to swim in it.
Emory’s got a super sweet tooth because they weren’t allowed to have sweet often. Without fail, you can always find something sweet at their apartment and she never fails to make sure the fridge is stocked with chocolate ice cream.
Had a crush on Charlie for ages 12-14, up until he confessed that he was definitely not into women. Died a little inside, moped for a month, then met a cute girl named Grace at school and fell in love. Also didn’t work out, but that’s irrelevant.
She’s never really had a serious relationship because of her trust issues. She’s sort of hoping that by meeting more occults, she’ll be able to find love with one because they’d know how it feels to be different.
Would possibly like to go back to uni one day? She isn’t sure whether it’ll happen, but she’s always loved music and would love to become a musician, so… maybe someday. When she’s gotten a handle on her magic.
Has Boston ever been to the magical realm? No. Did I honestly just really love those pics so you got to see them anyway? Yes.
Okay, that’s about it. Sorry for the probable overload of information, I just really like fleshing out my characters, so? Yeah. Enjoy!
