On the one hand, I understand how Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles could come about; someone wanted to write a ninja show, some executive or whatever thought that wouldn’t be interesting enough, told them to make the main characters some sort of animal and the rest is just filling in the questions. They’re animals because they’re mutated.
But on the other hand... why turtles? Turtles aren’t exactly what most people think of when you describe a ninja. Was it for the irony? Or were all the other animals the writers could think of already some other franchise mascot?
