What inspires

Growing up in the north woods along the shores of the Apple River is what inspires me to pursue a career as an ecologist. The natural world surrounded me growing up and instilled in me a love of, an interest in, and a curiosity about how what surrounds me works. This is why I study how ecosystems are connected through the atmosphere.

ESA student member Johanna Varner is inspired by all of the little animals that make a living in big mountains (especially pikas!).

This shot by Liz Pederson finds her way up on the Pfeifferhorn, a peak in the Salt Lake City Wasatch. Varner, a Salt Lake City native, is a PhD candidate in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Utah.

My inspiration comes from a deep appreciation of being outside. I love teaching others how biology is an everyday event occurring in their lives and that I get to have the coolest job of working in awe inspiring locations that most people look at on calendars. Science is for everyone!
