This week I will be focusing on the importance of kerning in Typography. Kerning is the adjustment of space between characters (or letters). The importance of kerning is this: if the letters are too close it becomes hard to read for the viewer and if it’s too far apart...than it becomes too awkward to read. And as brought out in creative market, “it can be frustrating for someone to read without fully understanding what’s wrong.” The key to successful kerning is be proportional with spacing between the characters and to take into consideration any serifs or any stylistic flourishes that may need tending to.. The picture above shows an example of the difference to what a phrase looks like before tweaking around with the kerning and AFTER it is fixed with kerning.
Giraffe Study
In a study done on zoo-housed giraffes and wild giraffes, differences in behavior were picked out through observation.
- Enclosure size: Giraffes on the reservation who had numerous acres of land to roam were said to be happier than the giraffes being held in the zoos (happiness was determined by interactions).
- A giraffe giving birth at a zoo showed signs of stress. It was kept separate from the other giraffes and paced immensely before giving birth.
SUGGESTIONS FOR ALL ZOOS BASED OFF THIS STUDY:
1) Large enclosure size that would best represent a natural habitat.
2) Allow animals to behave naturally - in the case of the giraffe, keeping her with the other giraffes.
So tomorrow is day ONE.
I’m tired. Extremely tired. You know why? I’m thinking about getting up at 6am, running, and then working a full 8 hour shift. No bueno. So I’m going to weigh myself in the mornings after I run, I’ve decided. And I’m prepping my water bottle for tomorrow. I hate, and I mean hate, just plain ice water. So I cut up a lemon and put it in the bottom to soak in the fridge over night. I’m scared I’m going to let myself down tomorrow morning. I really need and want to do this for myself.
