it’s kinda funny how haymitch always referred to messalina and her husband as great-aunt messalina and great-uncle silius in his internal thoughts as if they were his own relatives. instead of referring to them as effie or prosie’s great-aunt and uncle or calling them by their first names like people normally do when talking about individuals that they aren’t related too

the way snow probably thought effie being assigned as the district 12 escort was another great form of punishment for haymitch. because now the one constant figure in haymitch’s life that he was allowed to see year after year without fear that snow would hurt them was someone who he met during the second quarter quell, which was the start of haymitch’s string of bad luck. someone whose job it was to promote the same propaganda haymitch tried so hard to dismantle during his games. and someone so distinctly capitol, like snow, they’d be sure to get under his skin.

and yet, in sotr despite their differences haymitch never held effie’s capitolness against her noting she was a product of her environment and always made a point to highlight her postive traits. and while effie promoted the same propaganda that snow created she also quietly rebelled against it by treating haymitch and the other tributes like human beings and not dehumanizing them the way the games were meant to do. and most importantly, effie genuinely cared about haymitch and vice versa which means that haymitch was able to have some sort of companionship again despite snow’s efforts to rob him of that completely.

was trying to wrap my head around why proserpina talked about effie’s accomplishments at the university in past tense yet didn’t say that effie had graduated, and i think i figured out why!

in tbosas, snow says that academy students graduate mid-summer, have a month off, and then start school again in september. and since the hunger games begin july 4th and last several weeks, it’s safe to say the academy graduation is held at the end of july after the hunger games have ended. and it’s implied that the university follows that same academic calendar since snow starts his freshman year there in september.

so based on this, and assuming this system wasn’t changed, it’s safe to bet that effie was a senior at the university during sotr and graduated after haymitch’s games. also, if effie was still a student during that year, she could be the person that drusilla was referring to here:

The Hunger Games Books + Newcomers

10th Hunger Games vs the 50th Hunger Games

During both of these Hunger Games, the tributes were taken to an Academy building to meet with the Capitol students that would be assisting them during their games as part of a class assignment. But while in TBOSAS, it was Academy students serving as mentors, in SOTR it was University students serving as prep team members. It was also mentioned that the building Haymitch was taken to wasn’t used for 40 years, which means it was last used during Snow’s senior year at the Academy and likely was the same building that the tributes of 10th games were taken to.

Both sets of tributes were filmed/photographed while in a vulnerable state and chained up a certain points during their stay at the Capitol. They were also treated like animals in different ways. Haymitch and his group of tributes were sprayed with insecticides while Lucy Gray and her group of tributes were all confined together inside a zoo cage. And after he was crowned victor, Haymitch was also held in a cage and forced to put on a show for Capitol citizens like Lucy Gray was.

Lucy Gray was able to win her games by using poison, a plan that Snow helped her come up with. And in the 50th Hunger Games, everything inside the arena was poisonous.

Snow helped introduce the concept of sponsoring and sending food to tributes during Lucy Gray’s games since the tributes had no way of procuring any on their own. And in the 2nd Quarter Quell, tributes had to mainly depend on sponsors for safe food and water since they couldn’t trust the food in the arena besides what they got from the cornucopia

The snake mutts having Lucy Gray’s scent protected her during her games while in the 2nd Quarter Quell the mutts having the scent a tribute doomed them to death.

During the 10th Hunger Games, Snow ended up inside the arena and killed a tribute that attacked him. His experience in the arena was one of the key things that shifted Snow’s perceptive on the games and made him see them as essential. In the 50th Hunger Games on the other hand, young Gamemakers, who were likely University students, ended up inside the arena and were killed by tributes. Both Haymitch and Maysilee were quick to note that Gamemakers didn’t usually do grunt work and that their presence in the arena was odd as it implied that they were expendable.

In TBOSAS, a suspected rebel attack damaged the arena before the games began using a bomb and in SOTR, the rebels decided to damaged the arena from within using bombs yet again.

Snow sent Lucy Gray water during her games to save her life while he sent Haymitch posioned milk in an attempt to kill him.

In the 10th Hunger Games, several tributes died before making into the arena and the same thing happened during the 50th Games as well.
