A Gorgeous Timelapse of Potassium Phosphate Crystallizing Into Unique Fractals
I picked up this little science kit because it looked fun, and y'know what? It totally was.
A few days later the color had faded a bit:
Safety Precautions to Follow While Handling, Storing & Disposing of Ammonium Chloride
Chemicals like Potassium Phosphate Monobasic, Ammonium chloride are all reagents used in biochemical applications. According to the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, these two chemicals are hazardous. Therefore, safety precautions must be taken while handling these two chemicals.
Handling Ammonium Chloride and Potassium Phosphate Monobasic safely
Exposure to Ammonium Chloride and Potassium Phosphate Monobasic is moderately hazardous, leading to skin irritation, Shortness of Breath (SOB), headache, cough, and nausea.
Most exposure results from contact with Ammonium Chloride and Potassium Phosphate Monobasic. In addition, consistent exposure to these two chemicals can cause an asthma-like allergy or impact kidney function. Therefore, during any accidental contact, users should get immediate medical attention and follow the following first aid measures:
Skin contact: If your skin accidentally comes in contact with these two chemicals, immediately flush your skin with water and disinfectant soap. Also, use an emollient on the painful area.
Eye contact: Exposure to airborne concentrations above statutory or recommended exposure limits may cause irritation of the eyes. Therefore you need to rinse your eyes using clean water for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Do not forget to protect the unexposed eye.
Ingestion: When Ammonium Chloride reaches your mouth, make sure that you rinse your mouth thoroughly with water.
Inhalation: Go to fresh air and administer artificial respiration if needed.
It is imperative to follow proper safety precautions while handling Ammonium Chloride and Potassium Phosphate Monobasic in the workplace to avoid exposure. Educate employees about proper handling and storage to prevent accidents. Wear protective clothing, eyewear, and impermeable gloves at all times. Be sure to wash your hands after chemical handling. Ensure that adequate eyewash stations and ventilation are provided anywhere Ammonium Chloride is used or handled. Change into clean clothes in case of contamination.
It is also essential to monitor airborne concentrations of fumes in work areas. Exposure guidelines for Ammonium Chloride are limited to 10mg/m3. NIOSH-approved air-purifying particulate filter respirators must be used if fumes cannot be brought to below-recommended levels.
In an unfortunate event of a fire, Ammonium Chloride, and Potassium Phosphate Monobasic will produce poisonous gases, including hydrogen chloride, ammonia, and nitrogen oxides. Take appropriate fire-fighting precautions like using extinguishing agent suitable for the surrounding fire.
Also, promptly isolate the scene by removing everyone from the vicinity of the accident area if there is a fire.
Storage and Disposal of Ammonium Chloride
Ammonium Chloride is hygroscopic. Therefore, it should be stored in tightly closed containers in a dry, well-ventilated room. It is essential to keep the chemical separated from ammonium nitrate & potassium chlorate. It reacts violently with strong oxidizers, including permanganates, lead & silver salts, Bromium trifluoride, alkalis, and carbonates.
This chemical is harmful to humans, but it is also known to be toxic to aquatic life, so steps must be taken to prevent environmental damage. Always dispose of Ammonium Chloride in closed containers under federal, state, and local environmental regulations to stop it from reaching drains, sewers, and waterways.
The steps above are general guidelines. For exact safety information and emergency response procedures, review the safety data sheet (SDS/MSDS) for any product or chemical you use.
Storage of Potassium Phosphate Monobasic
Storing Potassium Phosphate Monobasic in accordance with local regulations is always recommended. Store the chemical in authentic container protected from direct sunlight in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from incompatible materials and food & drink. Keep container tightly sealed until the chemical is ready for use. Containers that kept opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage. Use appropriate containment to avoid environmental contamination.
