This does not hold any backing in the actual media, but I feel like Steve would go to a renaissance festival.
Like- maybe one summer everyone is busy and he wants to do something and he coincidentally finds a flyer for it and thinks to himself ‘oh, that would be a fun way to learn more about the kids interests’
And he goes, he has fun and meets new people. He even finds out about a fighting ring there! When he investigates it he immediately decides that he wants to do it (because it looks like fun and the people are wearing cool outfits)
He doesn’t join that year but through this he gets in contact with people in the fighting ring, and they give him tips about how to fight in this kind of environment.
Steve is visiting the entire renaissance festival each time he goes to one, and picks up trinkets as he goes. (I just think this part would be cute)
And a few years pass, the rest of the crew doesn’t figure it out because at that time of summer they are all really busy.
Steve wins his fights more often than not, and one year he wins it (I don’t know how these things work).
It turns out that the same year he won it corroded coffin preformed at the ren fair, and Eddie watched Steve win
(Tbh this might be closer to an AU than a head cannon but I really want to share this because I just thought the base idea of Steve going to a ren fair was super cute)
I love this! I do think Steve's the kind of guy who'd try doing such a thing so he can understand the kids' world better. And he'd have so much fun because there are so many cool things to do, and people there are so nice.
I like the idea that he doesn't exactly hide it from the kids, but doesn't advertise his new interest either. He's not ashamed of anything, he just like having this one thing for himself.
But I also like the idea of, one day, the kids asking Steve to take them to the fair, not knowing Steve's history there. And when they get there, they find out Steve is like a celebrity, one of their best duelists or something. Everybody knows him and the kids are just so surprised.
