After a long day of herding cattle, performing routine maintenance, and ensuring things are running smoothly. Enduring back-breaking labor that drives sweat down his body, the only person he wants to be with at the end of the day is you, the wild, smart, beautiful daughter of a farmer. The girl he’s known since they were children. Rarely leaving the farm unless it was to run away somewhere with him for the day. Taking you downtown to dance all night, or picking you up at the crack of dawn to race through the open plain. Your body thumping up and down to the pace of the horse. An intimate mixture of nature and his scent fills your nose. The wind roughly dancing through your hair, holding your hands around his waist like your life depends on it. And when he opens his mouth, he tells you, “I’ll take you anywhere you want.”
“I like the sound of that.” You say teasingly. You are completely desperately in love with each other. Though you’re father never understood it, he believed that cowboys were no good for girls like you. Sharing words quickly behind the barn on the days you’re father wanted you home. He would travel miles to see you, even if he could only speak to you for five minutes.
Rebelliously sneaking him into your room through the window. On nights when you could count the stars individually. Your scent to each other is intoxicating. Lying in bed together all night because he needed you, he craves the feeling of your warmth against his skin. The way you can’t look at him for more than a few seconds before looking to the ground. The way he holds you to him like you're part of him. Practically two bodies sharing one soul.
Sitting out in the sun, Virginia spring beauty flowers in your hair. Spring is finally here. After keeping each other cozy for a long winter, seeing his brown eyes shine in the morning sun is honestly the prettiest thing you’ve ever seen. Playful teasing turned into innocent horseplay. Leaving you pinned to the blanket. His head turned the sun into a crescent, A halo above his head. The world paused for a moment. The air was gone, there was only him, and you could only hear your heartbeat pounding in your ears. Eyes fighting over gazing into his eyes or at his lips. You want to feel like this for your entire life, but what if he doesn’t?
The thought clouds you’re starry moment. You push him off of you. His eyes are looking for the answer to your action, in yours. The continuing silence as you contemplate asking the question that has had a grip on you for all these years.
“What's wrong?” He breathed. You knew what was wrong, you wondered if he did too. Trying to get you to say what's been on your mind. “Nothin.” You whispered.
He let out a light chuckle, and as knights would kneel before noblewomen, he got on one knee. “There's no point in denying it. How does it sound spending the rest of your life with me?” He declared in his smooth southern drawl.
