In the 1989 POTO, I wish there had been more depth to Christine and Erik’s relationship. I do appreciate that this is a Christine who does not put up with Erik’s shit, but I do miss the self sacrificial element that I think is pretty crucial to a good POTO adaptation.

Now, I do not dislike the 1989 movie. I actually really like it and enjoy it more than a lot of other phans seem to. But I think it would have been even more unique if Erik remained a dark slasher, but with the addition of some more depth and the self sacrificial ending.

Of course, I recognize that’s not really what this movie set out to do. It is basically a film capitalizing off the slasher trend of the ‘80s and the popularity of the ALW POTO musical. There’s not a lot more to it than that.

But I wish it was deeper than that!!

Christine was actually built different in the 1925 and 1989 phantom of the operas because as much as I love other Christine’s they would absolutely not have jumped out of a moving vehicle after being kidnapped, and shot and ripped the face off the phantom
