POWER BLADE ~NES~ 1991

Some games pass us by with only a brief interaction. I have vague memories of Power Blade. My guess is that it succumbed to my weekend rental trial run, and failed to make a strong enough impression, or was simply downright too difficult. Back when perusing the game aisle of Blockbuster was both a delightful and aggravating experience.

That's Schwarzenegger. But we'll go with Nova. Set in 2191, A master computer has taken control and disrupted the world's peaceful existence.

Schwarzenegger... I mean Nova, is tasked with putting an end to this master computer and saving humanity. Along the way you must find an agent in each level and obtain an ID card from them to access the boss room.

Imagining I'm 11 again, I'm certain I thought this character was bad ass. No power blades were under my Christmas tree, however. Bummer.

Power Blade is short in length. 7 levels all told. An experienced gamer could knock it out in no time. Was I that "experienced" at 11? No sir.

The controls are decent. Power ups, items, and health, come relatively quickly. Most every enemy can be quickly handled. Make no mistake, I'm speaking about Normal mode. Feel free to dabble in Expert mode for yourself.

The near fatal flaw comes in the difficulty of jumping. The god damn jumping. Had I not been on an emulator with any time saves, I might have pulled out what little hair I have left. Though not enough of a headache to ruin the game, it's sure to be a pain in your ass at times.

If you're interested in making your life easier, be sure to find this suit in each level. And let's be honest, it's just plain cool.

I found each boss to be simple and easy. Some even laughably easy. I suppose for some, that's a welcome bonus for trudging your way through each occasionally frustrating level. For others, the lack of a boss challenge may leave you very unfulfilled.

While Power Blade's music is fitting for the story and the genre, it seems rather uninspired or memorable. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this game. It almost felt like Contra mixed with Mega Man and a dash of Robo Cop. Ah, the 80's and early 90's. What's not to like about that? In general however, it also feels average at best on all fronts. It took 27 years later for me to play it through, but there's a smile on my face. Long live Schwarzenegger... I mean, Nova.
