Thank you mom for giving me the love of reading. My youth please don't wait until you are behind bars to pick up a book, pick one up now and learn how to break boundaries. #afatherslove #sagenomad #powerfulimages (at Seattle, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnxhwluFtd_/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=x6pu2ttxkv7d

This photograph was taken by civil rights documentarian Charles Moore, showing a black woman about to be beaten with a bat, while another is punched about the head, during the non-violent protests of Montgomery Alabama in 1960. #BlackHerstory #PowerfulImages #STOOP55
Me: Hello. Dorothea. Your "Migrant Mother" photographs present in the Visual Communication textbook were extremely powerful.
Dorothea: Thank you, Heidi.
Me: When I look at these images, I couldn't help but feel sad and worried for the mother and her children. What is the background information on these photos?
Dorothea: The images were taken during The Great Depression. Poverty had forced her family, and many others, off into wandering lands where food, water, and other resources were scarce.
Me: The way you photographed this family made me think that that, or something like that, was the case. I think the black and white also makes the images seem more sad.
Dorothea: That is correct, black and white can sometimes be used to target more depressed and unhappy emotions.
Me: Without knowing much background information, I was able to make the assumption that the family was struggling in some way because of the way you photographed them. Their faces are sad, their clothes are worn down, and they are living in a shack. These images are very powerful, and were able to trigger so many emotions when I looked at them.
Dorothea: My goal with the images was to highlight some of the effects The Great Depression had on families.
Me: I think your photos did a very great job, thank you for sharing.
Dorothea: Thank you.
