I know this is like forever ago, but do we have permission to print up the Pacific Rim ID cards that you made as long as it is for personal use? I'd like to have one for the new movie :D

DRIFT SCIENCE APPENDIX A: PPDC Officers and UIDs, 2016-2020

The people have spoken! Everyone who liked and reblogged my post about drift science, THANK YOU, I am so flattered! I do read every single comment and a large number of the tags and I couldn't help but notice a trend: y'all want to know UID numbers for canon characters that didn't have one published.

Okay! I wrote up more than a few for my own works-in-progress, and I see no reason not to share. Organized by guesstimated start of service/Academy year, then by surname, I present the complete list of canon PPDC officers thus far, including canon UIDs for any and all inclined parties. Enjoy!

NOTES *Speculative guess, non-canon **Sasha's canon UID is SKAL. This could be a typo, but I have interpreted that she entered the PPDC before she and Aleksis married ***Canon assigned one number to the triplets; I gave this number to Cheung and extrapolated for Hu and Jin's UIDs. ****Mako's canon age is inconsistent across different media; I have chosen the April '03 date of birth and the same Academy class as Chuck. *****Mako's canon UID seems to follow 'surname's first letter, given name's first three letters' format. This seems likely to be a typo, based on observation of the original UID assigned to the Wei brothers, but arguably could be intentional, in respect of her being a woman of East Asian descent, belonging to a culture wherein surname is stated first. I have chosen to realign Mako's Ranger ID to match the format of other PPDC officers', and written original IDs for the other East Asian rangers in the same style. That being said, I am not Asian, and if told this course of action is inappropriate I will immediately revise the post to better align aforementioned UIDs with Eastern naming conventions.

Under the cut because ramble:

Messed with the textures some more before being 100% satisfied, and also swapped the standard barcode onto the lower/rectangular section of Hermann's card (my self-indulgent datamatrix printed too small to scan and I decided the standard was more aesthetically pleasing for something that isn't functional anyway. The upper/square QR code still links to my site, but Newt's features the standard QR, leading to the PPDC site).

Printed by my trusty inkjet on matte photo paper ALONG WITH 200,000 FUXING TESTS AND FAILS AND MOCKUPS IN 14,000 DIFFERENT SIZES ADN 1,200 TYPES OF PAPER I AM SO SORRY ENVIRONMENT I KILL SO MANY TREES??/? SEND HALP The Helpercat™s oversaw the printing process and ensured everything was in line with their rigorous QA standards.

The front and back of each card is attached along one side, so they were cut (very carefully) and then folded in half. Once folded, each card stands approximately 86mm tall by 53mm wide.

The badges to hold the cards had handles for the clips along the side which I removed, sanded the side smooth, clipped off a section of the removed handle, sanded the rough edges smooth, and reattached it to the back using hot glue.

The clips were removed from some lanyards I had lying around (always collect free lanyards when they're available, they have so many useful parts) and simply loop around the handle and button onto it.

The badge for Hermann's ID was painted black using enamel spray and finished with a matte sealant (clear section was covered by masking tape, and a piece of card slipped inside to mask the hole in the back), while Newt's was left clear.

Probably going to laminate the cards for overkill added protection and then call them done.

Whipped up a second PPDC ID badge for Newton, and made a couple of superficial alterations to Hermann's (mainly the look of the texture, and making the pattern-repeat/watermark thing less obvious/distracting).

Yet again, I sat way too close to the television doing the pause button thing to see what details could be made out of Newt's badge; the answer was: not a whole lot. I guess because he wears it clipped to his trouser pocket and outside certain genres of erotica, cinematographers tend not to linger on the crotch-shots so much. Who knew?!

The number on the lower corner of his card could easily have been either 05 or 06, so I went with 06 (being about 98% sure that Hermann's definitely is 05) because I feel like they probably go in pairs? Rolling with the whole co-pilot, left/right hemisphere thing. Like... if Raleigh and Mako are 01 and 02, then somebody else would have 03 and 04; thereby, if Hermann is 05 Newt must be 06. That's the excuse I'm sticking to anyway.

Newt's card has the standard QR codes rather than my shameless self-promotion ones since, y'know, his costume is for my co-pilot, not me. Though I'm sort of considering swapping the standard code onto the lower/rectangular section of Hermann's because it comes out too small to adequately read anyhow (or maybe that's just my phone).

One last note; the photos are suitably mangled screenshots from the film, which I've opted to put in black and white, despite the pilots ID photos clearly being colour. While sitting way too close to the television many of the ID photos did indeed appear to be BW rather than colour. Whether or not this is actually the case? I have no idea. It could just as easily be washed out, faded, oversaturated lighting, or just a result of having bad eyesight and no really clear shots of the cards so I'm just doing whatever the frick I want.
