The practical training of a Midshipman aboard a ship
We know roughly what the education of a midshipman on board a ship was like. It is known that besides the schooling (navigation, maths, etc.), much of the officer's profession was also learned on board. However, this differed from ship to ship and from captain to captain or lieutenant. For these gentlemen, especially the lieutenant to whose division the Midshipman belonged, held the reins of on-board training. On the one hand there was the sea daddy who taught the boys the knots and everything else like moving on board. Now, it could be that the lieutenant placed value on a mixed training and, in consultation with the captain, had a fairly free hand in what his protégés were to do.

Thus Midshipman Hamilton Davies was granted the responsible post of yeoman of the powder room at the age of 10. Midshipman Billy Lucas, on the other hand, was not allowed to take part in a boarding party because his lieutenant thought he was still too young at 15. This was not necessarily meant maliciously, because the lieutenants were not responsible for the training but also for the personal development of their protégés. And they usually saw more than a midshipman would like to admit. And so it was often divided up, the youngest learned the basics of seamanship and academic subjects, while the older ones took over official posts and duties. Which meant that they were also aloft to supervise the men and went on watches, even alone. To strengthen their character and prepare them for their officer career.

With the change of the division system, the boys had to take over part of the division of their lieutenants. This meant that they took over responsibility at an early stage. This also meant that they had to support their division in gun and small arms training. But they also had to control the storerooms, prevent theft and make sure their men were clean. Which certainly caused some surprise when a 12 year old tried to explain this to them and be their supervisior.
And depending on how they coped with this responsibility, they could also be given additional training and responsibilities. But that depended on their superiors, because if they had no ambitions to train their protégés well, then the midshipmen could wait a long time to become good officers. And so there could be gaps in training when they changed ships, which got around internally and the young gentlemen then tried everything not to be transferred to these ships. Some, however, were also quite happy that they didn't have to do anything extra and relied purely on their social background, which then also ensured that they usually became a bad captain, while not everyone who worked hard had the same chances of success of advancement, because if the social background was missing they could be praised by their superiors no matter how much and be equipped with letters of recommendation, they simply didn't get any further in their career.

It was therefore important that the lieutenants and captains really cared about their midshipmen and did not just collect their tuition money, which most of the parents had to pay. To ensure that no matter what background they came from, they all became good officers. However, this was not always successful.
