What is Purna Yoga?

Breathe In - Breathe Out
Doing physical exercises or yoga postures without proper breathing is of no benefit. Therefore, let us all understand the breathing technique, before we even start getting into yoga practice. The golden rule of breathing, when you perform any yoga posture is - Breathe In whenever you are going away from your body or your chest is expanding, Breathe Out whenever you are folding your body or your chest is contracting.
There is a strong connection between our body and mind. The condition of our body will affect our mind and vice versa, the condition of our mind will affect our body. Our breath works as a bridge between the two. Breath is not simply air that is just going in and out of our body. Breath is an intake of oxygen that gets distributed to our cells. The efficient, natural breath makes sure that every cell in our body receives the energy it needs to do its job such as growing, digesting, detoxifying, healing. Deep conscious breathing will fully expand our lungs and will in return provide enormous positive impact on our health. When we breathe better, we feel better.
Usually, people think that food is the main provider of our energy but we forget about a couple of other important sources out of which one is nominated to breath. Medical science say that One can live 3 weeks without food, 1 week without water and 3-4 nights without sleep, However, if one doesn’t breathe for more than 3-4 minutes, it can lead into serious and possibly irreversible brain damage.
Breath, life and energy are rooted together and yogis have grouped them in one word named as Prana. Ever since we took birth, we took our first breath on our own in the form of that vital force energy, and death will occur when that vital force energy leaves our body. So, it would not be wrong to say that when our pranic levels are high, the body will be completely charged with energy.
Irregularities of the breath is one of the obstacles that we seek to overcome by practicing Yoga. Yoga postures with full awareness of breathing are then combined with Pranayama which is the combination of two sanskrit words Prana (vital force) and Ayama (control of breath or to regulate the breath). Pranayama is the fourth limb of Ashtang Yog. While the breath comes automatically and unconsciously, pranayama is the conscious, deliberate regulation of the breath and pran (the vital force).
Everything we do is affected by our breathing. Just think, last time when you got angry or felt fearful, your breath became fast, shallow and irregular. Compare this to when you fell asleep in a comfortable chair. Probably, your breath was deeper and slower. This is what our ancient yogis have recognised that when breathing becomes calm, the mind will too. So, Pranayama is a great tool given to us by them to practice, if we want to bring our mind in control.
To practice Pranayama, we should first prepare our body by paying attention to our breath. Be aware of your inhaling and exhaling. Try it anytime, anywhere. Breathing through your nose, observe the amount of air going in and out. Is it smoothly flowing? Is it equally flowing in the left and right nostril? Is it warm or cold? After doing it for some time, feel the change your body is going through. Observe the change in your mind it’s going through.
There are different forms of Pranayama exercises and is a vast subject to touch. I will touch that side a bit later to describe all exercises one by one as I feel I would not do justice if I combine that practice here only. Until then, please take care of yourselves and don’t forget to fill your lungs with full air and out completely!!!
