As is the message of so many New Years, Bestu Varas - Gujurati New Year - is “the day to forget about their past rivalries and misunderstanding and welcome a new beginning.” Like Jain New Year, it is the day after Diwali - but the HIndu version. . This year, 19th/ 20th October - or rather, Shukla Paksha Pratipada in the month of Kartik on the Hindu calendar - marked the beginning of Gujarati year 2074. . Avid followers of the Year of Years may recall that earlier this year other Hindus celebrated New Year. This is the same calendar - but Gujurati people count it as starting at a different time. . The best practice I have found about the celebrations is this picture. Which is "Gujarati businessman performing Diwali day Chopda Pujan ceremony during which they worship account books for Gujarati new year and take pledge in presence of Guru/Saint/Brahmin/Maharaj for honest and ethical practice in business throughout the year." . Though I wouldn't want to encourage further worship of the laptop, I am a big fan of the sentiment. .
