The Feelies. Yung Wu. Speed the Plough. Luna.

Members of New Jersey band, The Trypes have variously played in all the above bands.

And "Music for Neighbors" sounds like the sum of its parts. It really is that good. Several years ago Acute Records issued "Music for Neighbors" with extra downloads. Now, Chicago based Pravda Records is reissuing it again - and again it comes with extra downloads, including two new songs.

Pravda Records has been active since the mid-1980s and also released material from another Glenn Mercer project, Wake Ooloo.

I ran across this release because I was listening “Head vs. Wall” by The Service (Pravda Records, Chicago).  I recalled owning something by Pravda, so I clicked to see what else they were selling on Bandcamp.  Lo and behold, Glenn Mercer’s solo debut “Wheels in Motion” was listed.  I’d never listened to this, and didn’t even know it existed.  This, despite the fact that I love The Feelies, and own some Wake Ooloo.

“Wheels in Motion” is better than Wake Ooloo, and frankly better than The Feelies most recent release. It essentially is The Feelies without Bill Million.  I would start with “Whatever Happened” and go from there.  This album reminded me of Spiral Jetty, an 80s band whose early releases sound a lot like The Feelies.  Finally, I realized that listening to “Wheels In Motion” reminded me of Robert Scott (The Bats).  Subsitute Mercer’s voice for Scott.

“Wheels in Motion” was released on vinyl in 2015 by Sinister Torch Records.

By the way, I figured out what I owned on Pravda - Wake Ooloo and Precious Wax Drippings.

Glenn Mercer was and still is from New Jersey.
