Noisey and Vice Magazine did a short doc on the newly coined “Cholo-Goth” movement headed by San Diego duo “PRAYERS”: 

“The pioneering electronic/industrial "cholo goth" duo Prayers formed in 2013 with vocalist Leafar Seyer and producer Dave Parley. Both Mexican immigrants, the two have transformed the sound and look of modern gothic music.”

It’s fucking great to see more San Diego heads making waves. There are a few (check out: GaslampKiller, Soulection), and this one is brand new. My boyfriend brought me to see these guys play at The Office in North Park a couple years ago. When he explained to me what we were going to see was dubbed ‘Cholo-Goth’ I had no idea what to expect. As soon as they started to play I felt the kind of rawness and indeed, vulnerability that one only experiences when listening to something new and authentic. Art is about speaking for the unspoken and calling for a conversation. In music especially, it’s about pushing the boundaries of genre and creating something that cannot be categorized--or better yet creating a new category altogether. Say what you will about this, it may not be for you and that is fine. It is not meant to be digested with ease alongside the junk-food culture we’re fed today. It isn’t interested in your approval. It only asks to be heard. And I hear it. Word!
