It was “every public safety professional’s worst nightmare,” sighed Chattanooga Police Chief Fred Fletcher. At least 24 children, all from Woodmore Elementary School, were taken to the hospital after the crash, with six in Intensive Care Units at area hospitals.

A student recounted the accident to a local CBS affiliate, saying “they were going very fast” and the driver seemed he “wasn’t paying attention.” Authorities have since arrested and charged the driver with vehicular manslaughter and reckless driving.

My heart is broken right now as I watch my news feed on Facebook. I can't believe the horrific tragedy and loss families in my city have had to endure today. My city is strong and has been through a lot and I know as a community we will be there for these families. I was at work when I saw the news and began to cry. Those poor babies. To be taken so young. If you pray, if you send good vibes, whatever it is just do it for those affected by this catastrophe today.
