Snow drifted past the busted windows of Dante’s shop, glowing neon‑red from the flickering “Devil May Cry” sign he still hadn’t bothered to fix. Inside, the place looked like Christmas had lost a bar fight — tinsel everywhere, lights half‑working, wrapping paper in drifts, and two six‑month‑old twins who had already caused more collateral damage than most low‑tier demons.
“Dante,” Opal said, voice dangerously calm, “the tree is leaning.”
“It’s not leaning,” Dante said, flicking a string of lights like he was testing a weapon. “It’s striking a pose.”
“It’s going to fall,” Elias corrected, catching Evalynn before she could body‑slam herself off the table. “Again.”
“That was one time,” Dante said.
“Twice,” Lady added, loading a candy‑cane‑painted round into her launcher. “And the second time it tried to bite you.”
“That was Dante,” Opal said.
“HEY—!” Dante started, but Selene grabbed his nose with a tiny iron grip and yanked. He froze, remembering he did the trick where he "took" Selene's nose. “Okay, I definitely deserved that.”
Evalynn, not wanting to be outdone, slapped him in the cheek with a glitter‑coated ornament. Hard. Lady nodded approvingly, “They’re naturals.”
Opal sighed. “Can we please have one normal Christmas Eve? Just one. No demons. No explosions. No—”
The Christmas tree twitched. Everyone stopped. A low, guttural growl vibrated through the branches. Selene squealed. Evalynn kicked her legs like she was cheering for it. Lady sat up straighter as she called out, “Called it.”
Dante’s grin spread slow and wicked — the exact grin he wore right before doing something reckless. “Oh, hell yeah. Christmas spirit.”
“No,” Opal said, pointing at him. “No spirit. No style. No—”
The star on top spun like a buzzsaw. The tree snapped upright with a roar. Dante cracked his knuckles. “Guess we’re doing this the festive way.”
The demon tree lunged. Dante vaulted over the couch, sliding across the floor on his knees as he grabbed Rebellion from under a pile of wrapping paper. “Honey, I’m home!”
Lady fired a rocket that whistled like a jingle bell. Elias ducked with both babies tucked under his arms like footballs. “This is what I get for accepting your offer, Dante — but at least it’s better than the Viperias.”
Selene squealed louder. Evalynn drooled on his shirt.
Opal yelled out, “Dante, if you break the floor again—”
“No promises!”
The tree swung a branch like a spiked club. Dante flipped over it, landed on the coffee table, and pointed Rebellion like he was posing for a magazine cover. “Let’s make this a Very Merry Smackdown.”
The tree roared. The twins giggled. Christmas went full S‑RANK. Opal took out her diamond throwing knives, slicing at the branches with precise, practiced aim — but the demon’s bark was tougher than expected.
“One day,” she muttered, “you will be the death of me, Dante.”
She dodged a whipping branch, seized an opening, and vaulted upward — only for the tree to snag her mid‑climb and swing her around like a ragdoll. Dante barked a laugh. “Looks like you’re having fun up there, babe!”
Opal gritted her teeth, clinging to the branch as the room spun. She shot him a glare, though laughter sparked in her eyes. “Fun? I swear, Dante, you’re insane! This is NOT what I had in mind for a quiet family Christmas Eve!”
But the adrenaline was intoxicating. Fighting beside him — matching his chaos with her precision — was becoming dangerously familiar. And seeing him in his element, all roguish grin and wild joy, made her heart race in ways she’d never admit out loud. She drew Indigo, one of her twin corundum daggers, and after several sharp strikes, the spinning star exploded off the top of the tree. Spotting the exposed weak point at the trunk, she shouted, “Get the trunk! That’s the demon’s weak point—Aaah!”
The tree hurled her across the room. She crashed onto the couch, breath knocked out, but unharmed.
Dante didn’t hesitate. Devil Trigger flared to life, demonic energy crackling around him as he launched himself into the air. Rebellion gleamed in the dim light as he brought it down in a brutal arc, cleaving into the trunk with raw, unrestrained force. The demonic wood splintered, dark ichor spraying across the floor. The tree shrieked, branches thrashing wildly as it sensed its end. Dante pressed harder, each strike fueled by instinct, fury, and a twisted sense of holiday cheer. Lady joined him, unloading a storm of bullets. Together, the two moved like a force of nature — the reckless devil hunter and the witch with perfect aim, tearing through the demon’s last defenses. With a final, agonized scream, the tree collapsed inward. Dust and ash billowed through the room, thick with the acrid scent of demonic blood and spent power. As the haze settled, Dante spotted Opal sitting on the couch, dazed but alive. Relief washed over him, followed by a grin he couldn’t suppress. Elias peeked out from behind the counter, twins in his arms. “Well, so much for the Christmas tree — considering it was a demon all along.”
Selene giggled. Evalynn babbled, reaching for her parents. Opal stood, taking the twins into her arms. “At least the shop is still standing, and no one got hurt. But we have a mess to clean up.”
All three hunters surveyed the carnage — blood on the walls, pine needles everywhere, splintered wood, and the demon’s corpse lying limp on the floor.
---
All began to clean up — even Selene and Evalynn, who “helped” by gleefully throwing demon‑tree pieces across the room like it was the best game ever.
After a few long hours, the shop was finally clean. Opal, Lady, and Elias collapsed onto the couch, exhausted. The twins, however, were far from done. Their curious eyes locked onto Rebellion, and before anyone could stop them, Evalynn’s tiny hand wrapped around the hilt. She dragged it closer and immediately began gumming the upper part of the handle. Selene followed suit, chewing happily on the guard. Lady snorted, and Opal giggled behind her hand as Dante turned toward his daughters.
“Hey now,” he murmured, easing the sword away, “that’s not a chew toy. Respect the weapon, girls.”
He tucked Rebellion safely away, then booped their noses, earning giggles.
“You two are gonna be little demon hunters, huh? When you’re ready, Daddy’s gonna make sure you’re the best of the best — just like your mommy and Auntie Lady.”
Evalynn cupped Dante’s face with both tiny hands while Selene tugged at his hair. Opal watched with a soft smile, warmth blooming in her chest. She sits up and says to Dante and their girls with a wink, "I suppose we can call it a night, so we'd get a good night's sleep for Santa."
Dante looked up at Opal, a playful smirk tugging at his lips as he met her wink with one of his own. He then looked at his daughters and said, "Alright, you little rascals, time to get you tucked in. We've got a big day tomorrow, and Santa can't come if you're not asleep!"
---
With Elias and Lady finally heading home, the shop fell into a rare, peaceful quiet. Opal stood beside Dante near the crib, watching their daughters sleep curled against each other.
She glanced up at him. “You miss your brother?”
Dante didn’t answer immediately. His gaze lingered on the twins, on the warmth and innocence he never thought he’d have again. When he finally turned to her, his expression was a mix of nostalgia, longing, and something heavier.
“I do,” he said softly. “Especially on nights like this… when it’s quiet. Peaceful. Makes me think of the Christmases we used to have. Mom, Dad, Vergil and me… we were a family once.”
His eyes drifted, distant.
“But that was a long time ago. Things changed. We changed. Vergil… he had his path, and I had mine. And now…”
He paused, then breathed out slowly.
“But now I have you. And our girls. And no matter what happens… we’re a family. A real one.”
Opal cupped his cheek. “If you ever need a shoulder to cry on, I’m right here. You’re not alone.”
Dante leaned into her touch, eyes glimmering with emotion. “I know. And if you ever need me… I’m here. Always. You and me, against the world.”
He kissed her — slow, deep, full of devotion.
When they parted, breath mingling, Opal whispered, “Shall we get the gifts ready for the morning?”
Dante grinned. “You read my mind.”
He laced their fingers together and led her to the living room.
Together, they wrapped presents, laughing softly, exchanging warm glances. As the pile grew, Dante slipped his arms around her waist, resting his chin atop her head.
“Thank you, Opal,” he murmured. “For everything. For loving me. For this family.”
She smiled as she finished the last gift. Opal turns and gently kisses Dante as she straddles him. As their kisses became a makeout session, Opal knew she didn't want to wake the girls from their "gifts" to each other, so she covered her mouth with one hand, and the other raking through his hair as he began kissing her throat.
But even as the heat built, Dante was mindful of their sleeping daughters just down the hall. He didn't want to risk waking them, not when they had such a big day ahead of them. So he tempered his usual enthusiasm with a newfound sense of restraint, his touches remaining gentle and tender even as they grew more heated.
Dante's hands slid up from Opal's hips, slowly, teasingly, until they came to rest just beneath the swell of her breasts. He could feel the weight of them, the softness of her skin, and it took every ounce of willpower he possessed not to divest her of the shirt she wore. But he held back, knowing that they had to be quiet, had to be mindful of their little ones.
Instead, Dante focused on the task at hand, his lips and tongue working magic on the sensitive skin of Opal's throat. He nipped and suckled, soothed the sting with soft kisses, all while his hands continued their slow, sensual exploration of her curves. He wanted to drive her wild, to hear her cry out in ecstasy, but he also wanted to worship her, to show her just how much he adored every inch of her body, scars and all.
Dante knew that he was a lucky man to have a woman like Opal in his life. He knew that he would spend the rest of his days trying to be worthy of her love and devotion, to give her the happiness and fulfillment she deserved. And he knew that no matter what challenges they faced, they would face them together - as one, now and forever.
