Canon AU, takes place pre-Dark Phoenix. Erik & Logan as grumpy not-quite friends in Genosha :D
-----
"You need some chickens."
Erik looks up from the tangle of seaweed, driftwood and fishing net, squinting a little against the sun's rays reflecting off the water. It's just the two of them today, working on the beach, doing repairs on the boats and fixing lobster traps while Rictor heads out into deeper waters with Franny and Akiri.
"Chickens?"
"That's what I said."
Curiosity piqued, Erik drops his section of the net and takes a slow drink out of his water bottle. This is the first time Logan has made any kind of comment or suggestion about the commune, and maybe the first time he's initiated a conversation with Erik since his arrival two months ago to Genosha. Even then it wasn't much of a chat; a simple request for shelter in exchange for work, and no questions or explanations.
He still doesn't understand, why the man isn't helping with Charles' School or with the X-Men, instead of digging ditches and chopping wood in the middle of nowhere. Erik knows Logan only as the man from the future; someone Charles trusted with his life and his secrets, and who trusted Charles in turn. Whatever the man's running from; whatever demons might be dogging his steps...he knows without a doubt that Charles would empathize, and do anything to help him.
Then again, maybe he does understand.
"What would we need?"
Logan spits out the stick he's been chewing on, and drops a handful of matted seaweed onto the pile at his feet. "Not much. A sturdy coop. Some good feed. A rooster and few hens to start. I'm sure we can get everything we need from a farmer on the mainland."
Erik huffs, not quite hiding the smile pulling at his lips. "What's this 'we' business? How about 'you' take care of it, since it's your brilliant idea."
"Fine," Logan says, rolling his eyes. "But then I'm gonna keep the eggs all to myself."

For once, Erik doesn't say anything except 'thank you', when Logan sets a plate of freshly scrambled eggs in front of him almost three weeks later.
