Over the last decade, India has seen a rise in the number of International Baccalaureate (IB) schools in India. These schools promise world-class education and infrastructure to parents who want nothing less than the best for their kids. More About IB
IB is an International Education Foundation that has programs recognised globally. A school has to run any of the programmes offered by IB. Besides, the school needs to be authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organisation.
At present, India has 108 Diploma Programmes (DP), 63 Primary Year Programmes (PYP) and 21 Middle Year Programmes (MYP), and Career-Related Programme (CRP) subscriber schools. Of the programs, IB diploma certificate is the most popular programme. It is seen that many schools running ICSE and CBSE boards also opt for Diploma Programme in place of School Certificate Exams.
The Process
The first step of IB affiliation is called Global Authorization Process. The school must provide its details in an application form that is further considered to determine if there’s a possibility of introducing the IB curriculum. Also, the school needs to analyse how adaptable it is to the IB curriculum. The school must take the advice of its promoters, academia and finance people in this matter. At any point in time, the philosophy of the school should not clash with the IB vision.
Besides doing a feasibility study, the school leadership should also participate in category 1 workshops that will help them in known the authorisation process of IB in a better way. It might take a school anywhere between 2 to 3 years to get IB affiliation.
Upon getting IB affiliation, the school needs to work on its pre-primary curriculum, middle-school and higher school curriculum also. Though IB has a set curriculum, customising the learning that benefits the students is always a good idea.
