Sammie and Jedediah.

“They call me Preacherboy, account of my daddy being a pastor, I wrote this song for him.”

Blues musicians have different renditions of their own songs that they sing in various ways. Which got me thinking. Sammie wrote I lied to you for his father, Jedediah. He sings about his love for him, and his struggle between his faith and his love for blues music. He sang so beautifully, it pierced the veil, summoning spirits and attracted Remmick, leading to the most horrific night of his life. 

So Jedediah’s first instinct is not to comfort his son but to stop Sammie’s mother, Ruthie, from comforting him, then scolds his bloody, bruised and scarred son, in front of the congregation, to use as an example that was just extremely cruel and humiliating. Now, Jedediah isn’t Adam Moore, but he’s certainly not getting the father of the year award. 

I think that night was the first and last time Sammie sang that song. 

However, on a lighter note, I wonder if Jed called up for some of that "devil’s music" money after Sammie became famous?

I just want to taste your brown sugar, the darker the berry, the sweeter the juice — and for you, I’ve developed a sweet tooth.

Your voice, so enchanting, it’s gotta be hoodoo, rooted in the hymn of the ancestors. Your body sings when your hips circle against mine, I yearn for your brown sugar.

Dark, caramel, dripping when we connect in fields of jasmine. Smooth and supple, slipping through my fingertips. Your skin tastes like honey on my tongue, and brown sugar when I go deeper.

Piano keys and ecstasy, a soft melody, weaving through the night. Every second, every minute, every hour, brown sugar, homemade, just for you.
