Prehensile lips are a great feature, especially for great apes! If you are largely quadrupedal and have no tail, it is super convenient for you to have a way to manipulate objects with your face!

It can also be a great advantage. For example, the armless Bornean orangutan Kopral uses his feet and mouth to do everything that his arms would normally do. Despite this life altering disability, Kopral is a force to be reckoned with and has become an alpha on his protected sanctuary island where he can live just like he would in the wild, except without the risk of predation and other threats to his survival.
Prehensile lips aren’t just interesting, they’re quite useful! You can also thank evolution for dropping this skill in the great ape family tree for giving you the ability to talk. Truly, prehensile lips are a great trait to have.
