How to Get a Metrobank Prepaid Mastercard (Updated: May 29, 2018)
It has been more than a month since my last post but it can’t be helped as I am still stuck at home, processing papers for our trip. We planned on going out here in the Philippines first for the summer but it’s just so hot that introverts like us just want to stay at home.
Anyway, since we planned on going abroad and we started looking for plane tickets, I realized that all of the airlines require credit card as a mode of payment when you book online. There are some, like Cebu Pacific, that accept payment through 7-11 or other more convenient ways, but credit card is a must if we wanted to book online.
I already have a Paymaya account. I never had any problems with it but with all the bad reviews on their Facebook account, I decided to look for another one which I can use as a credit card because plane tickets are not cheap and I don’t want to entrust that amount of money with Paymaya.
It is when I stumbled upon this Metrobank Prepaid Mastercard.
(May 29, 2018 update)
To comply with the need for all cards to have EMV chip (?), Metrobank changed the cards and you can’t use your non-EMV card anymore. You can have your old card replaced for free if you still haven’t replaced it yet. Note that you have to call their hotline to adjust the daily limit of your transactions because once you have a new card, it will be set again to Php 30,000 maximum. (See below for details about this.) I had this replaced earlier this year and the validity is now longer. Before it was just 2 years, now I think it’s 10 years already based on the printed validity of this card. This is what the card looks like now:
This card can be used online like a credit card, but with the functions of a debit card - meaning you can just top it up with money so no credit card fees or anything like that. What you top up there is your money and you don’t owe the bank anything.
I have read on the internet that this can be used abroad as well but when I went there they said that it cannot be used there and that I need to apply for their debit card if I want to use it abroad. I didn’t ask anymore because the officer there is not that friendly and I’m just really tired.
Without further ado, here are the steps in getting a Metrobank Prepaid Mastercard:
STEP 1: SECURE REQUIREMENTS
I don’t understand why the requirements differ from one branch to another* but just to be safe, have 2 valid government-issued IDs and have it photocopied. I showed my Driver’s License with receipt and my Voter’s ID and they accepted it.
STEP 2: GO TO “NEW ACCOUNTS” IN METROBANK AND SAY THAT YOU’RE APPLYING FOR A PREPAID MASTERCARD
They will then ask for your IDs and a photocopy of your IDs and give you a form which you’ll fill out.
Note: I am unemployed as I am still a student so I wrote N/A in the occupation part. When the bank officer asked my source of funds, I just said allowance.
STEP 3: PAY THE FEE
The fee for this card is only Php 100.00 so it’s really inexpensive. You don’t need to have a maintaining balance. You can then top it up by depositing money here through the bank or through online/mobile banking. Scroll down for details regarding deposits.
STEP 4: WAIT FOR THE CARD
They will immediately print the card with your name on it and they’ll give it to you to sign it.
STEP 5: CHANGE PIN
After giving you the card, you’ll have this piece of paper with a temporary PIN code on it. You just go to the nearest ATM, insert your card, and you’ll be prompted with the password. Type the temporary password. Then just navigate your way through the screen to change the password.
And that’s it! It’s actually really easy and inexpensive.
The card is valid for 2 years.
(May 14, 2017 update) So recently I topped my card with money because we’ll use it to buy plane tickets. Here are some very important reminders you need to know:
THERE IS A PHP 25 FEE IF YOU’LL DEPOSIT MONEY THROUGH THE BANK
Regardless of the amount you’re depositing, as long as you’ll deposit it in Metrobank, there is a Php 25 fee. However, if you’ll just transfer funds online, then it’s free.
THE LIMITATIONS
WITHDRAWAL, POS & ONLINE TRANSACTIONS
You can only withdraw up to Php 30,000 per day, and your POS/online transactions is also limited to only Php 30,000 per day. Worry not, because you can ask for the adjustment of the limitation by calling their hotline:
Metro Manila: +632 8700 700
Domestic Toll Free: 1 800 1888 5775
If you don’t have landline, you can go at any Metrobank branch and tell them that you want to adjust the transaction limitation of your card. Our landline was not working at that time so I just went at Metrobank. They dialed the number, and I waited for about 30 mins. before someone was able to answer the call. The officer there told me that it’s always the case. The CSR just asked for my card number, my name, some details to prove that you’re the account holder. I said that I wanted it to be adjusted to Php 100,000 because I’ll use it to buy plane tickets. Tell them that you want both the withdrawal and online transaction to be adjusted. I was put on hold for about 3 minutes, then the CSR told me that it’s okay already and that it will take effect after about 15 minutes. I went home and was able to buy our plane tickets!
DEPOSIT
You can only deposit up to Php 150,000 per month. This can also be adjusted by calling their hotline.
REGISTER IN THEIR WEBSITE
For you to be able to see how much you have left in your card and some other details, register here. I liked that when I bought plane tickets online, I was able to immediately see my remaining balance.
For more information, go here.
*My 18-year old sister first went to the Metrobank branch located in front of Casino Filipino. She is still a college student and the IDs she brought are her passport and her school ID. The officer there asked for a proof of billing which she didn’t have at the time. We went at another Metrobank branch, this time the one located in Marquee Mall, and they said that they don’t need the proof of billing and they need her certificate of registration from the school as she is a student. She was not bringing it at the time so I was the one who applied instead of her. It is good to take note that on their list of accepted valid IDs, it is stated that a school ID signed by the school’s authorized signatories is a valid ID with no certificate of registration needed.
