Watched #PretendItsACity - @martinscorsese_ 's series of interviews with #FranLebowitz - I thought it was pretty great, funny and exploring the parts of her personality, someone somewhat caught in a different era but also hyper aware of feeling out of step with this one-with both a certain sense of humility coupled with an I-don't-give-a-fuck defiance of it existing simultaneously. The first painting I did while in lock down in March, featured a portrait of Fran Lebowitz (with cigarette) in the upper right, and Martin Scorsese bottom center. I choose my images instinctively, not based on who they are. Somehow these two figures just seemed to fit the composition. Their expressions suited the concept, and, incidentally, two people I admire. I had no idea that they had been working together on a new TV series which was recently released. Psychic?? The painting is called, “Red Sky in Morning”, based on the old saying “Red sky at night, sailors delight. Red sky in morning, sailor’s warning”, that I know from my sailing days. This was when the virus was bearing down on the city, a frightening time.
