Everyone watching Ink & Parchment get closer to October 1981…
Hello friends, and welcome to the ninth installment of Beyond The Shelves!
This month’s creator spotlight is @prettyremus who always manages to capture magic and realism in his thoughtful works, featuring endearing characters that are as strong as they are endearing. Get to know this captivating author, one of the Librarian's favorites, and wish him a happy birthday! 🥳 (It's this week!) Then check back for a post on his fic recs later today!
📚📚📚
Name: RJ (real name, nothing to do with Remus)
Pronouns: he/him
Where can people find you online?: I’m @prettyremus here on tumblr and pixelated/prettyremus on AO3
Favorite snack: Dill pickle chips
Favorite drink: I literally only drink water and tea, chai is my comfort though.
Dream trip: Traveling? No thank you, I prefer to stay home in bed like the uncultured swine I am.
What are your favorite ships?
Wolfstar, Draco/Charlie (swear I’m gonna make this a thing)
What's your favorite thing about Remus & Sirius?
I love that they have all of these connections—the canines, the astronomy. Both of them being broken and needing love. Sirius’s need to give love and Remus’s eagerness to accept it. How Remus is gentle but angry and how Sirius is angry but gentle. They’re very clearly soulmates and I don’t even believe in that shit.
Do you associate any songs or playlists with them?
Yeah! I made a playlist for my fic NIWBYD, which can be found here!
I have a ton of other songs I associate with them as well—remind me to make an actual playlist someday.
What do you think your signature is?
Detailed descriptions that play out the scenes in your head like a movie, smut with feelings, domesticity, realistic depictions of m/m relationships, historical AUs, monsterfucking, Snape getting punched in the nose.
Do you change your styles with different fics or are you always trying to improve on the last one?
It definitely depends on the fic. If I’m going for fluff I tend to keep it relatively simple and straightforward, for historical AUs I try to write as the characters would have spoken back then, for heavier stories I use a lot of imagery and plenty of metaphors.
What advice would you give new authors?
Write whatever YOU want and don’t feel like you have to align yourself with popular fandom tropes. Find a writer whose style you admire, and ask them to beta your work. Worst they can say is no!
What inspires you?/Where do you get your ideas?
Music, movies, and my IRL relationship with my partner.
What are you working on now/next?
I have too many WIPs to focus on only one because I’m a mess, but I really want to finish the western AU I’ve been working on, my fae Remus fic, and the Velvet Goldmine AU I’ve been hinting at for years.
What's a favorite fic you wrote and why?
Amor Vincit Omnia. I feel it’s my best work by far, but the subject matter is kinda heavy and it doesn’t get the love I think it deserves.
What is something you look for when reading other fics?/What kind of fics do you wish you could read?
I want realistic depictions of queer men/relationships. I want happy endings. To be honest, I’m tired of coffee shop and university AUs. I love stories that are different. I want to read adventure, horror, sci-fi, historical AUs. Branching out is fun! And these fics are my favorites when the proper research is done.
Any final thoughts?
I love feedback from readers! Tell me what you want to read. My inbox is always open, and while I can’t promise that I’ll ever have the mental energy to actually write them, I do love receiving prompts. Literally send me anything, anytime.
🍬💕 get me out of my writer’s block pls
I give my great big box of candy hearts a shake...
I open it up to pull one out for @prettyremus and see the inscription...
