Public Influenza Clinics Announced

(Le Mars, IA)  Floyd Valley Healthcare will be offering public influenza (flu) and COVID vaccination clinics on Thursday October 21stand Tuesday October 26th from 5pm-7pm.  The clinic will be located inside the north Conference Center entrance. Please bring your driver’s license/form of ID and your insurance card(s).

We will be offering the following flu vaccines:

Flulaval Quadrivalent vaccine for ages 6 months and up

Flublok Quadivalent vaccine for ages 18 and older          

Fluzone HD Quadrivalent vaccine for ages 65 and older

We will also be offering COVID vaccinations including:

Vaccine recommended for ages 18 and older

2 dose series, 28 days apart

Moderate to severely immunocompromised individuals 28 days after 2nd dose

All other individuals 6 months after 2nd dose

*if you are needing a 2nd dose or Pfizer booster dose, please bring your white vaccine card with you

The flu shot is your best protection when it comes to the flu and flu related symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, and chills. According to the CDC or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention people aged six months and above should get the flu vaccine every year. Flu strains change so the vaccine you may have gotten this time last year will be of no help this season. The shot is particularly important this year mainly because of Covid19 which is still a cause of major concern. Why get vaccinated early? It takes nearly two weeks of the flu shot to get the antibodies into your system so you are not protected, for example, until the September/October timeframe. This however will not make you sick just as earlier stated and debunking the myths surrounding the vaccine. It is made from viruses which are nonreactive or have only one gene and thus are incapable of producing a disease. There could be some post administration side effects such as mild pains or feel more tired; these effects are temporary.

It’s not too late for a flu shot

While you usually want to get a flu shot well before flu season gets started, that isn't always possible. With flu shot delays or shortages, you and your child might not always be able to get a flu shot when you want.

Late Flu Shots

So when is it too late to get vaccinated against the flu?

The CDC recommends getting vaccinated early, but they also say, "Getting vaccinated later, however, can still be beneficial and vaccination should continue to be offered throughout the flu season, even into January or later."

So it is really never too late to get a flu vaccine.

When Should You Get a Flu Shot?

While ideally, you should have gotten your flu shot by September or October, that sometimes doesn't happen.

Why wait?

The early start to a flu season might catch you by surprise so that you simply didn't have time to get you or your kids the flu vaccine. Others might wait, thinking they didn't need one, but then became concerned about the reports of how bad flu season has been the last few years.

Of course, it is always better to get a flu shot much earlier so that you are protected for the full flu season.

Finding Flu Shots

Because of the flu shot delays and shortages in past years, finding a flu shot, even if you want one, has sometimes been difficult.

Increased demands as flu activity increases have a lot of people looking for flu vaccine who might otherwise have skipped getting vaccinated though. That could have meant that your doctor was already out by the time you wanted one.
