Revisiting Influenza
Childhood exposure to strain of influenza provides lifelong immunity to said strain (2). To this extent, let us consider a fun experimental math problem. One year to a 30-year-old is 1/30 of their total life. One year to a 1-year-old is 100% of their total life. Let us consider the immune system to act somewhat Bayesian, with past information being weighed in order to consider the outcome of the current situation. Infections at a young age stand out as they occupy a much larger percentage of temporal time than the same infection will at 30. The body draws the “H” in Happy Birthday way to large. Influenza has multiple strains, and immunity to one strain may only grant partial immunity from the others. However, partial immunity can help decrease an individual’s overall pathogen count as the body is doing something at least. An antibody which is a partial match takes up the same physical space as a full match but is just less effective than a full one. The more partial matches you have, the less free space will be available for new, exploratory immune responses, like saplings competing for a vacancy in the canopy. We would thus expect a mortality curve which starts off high, due to a lack of an immune response, drops down thanks to partial immunities, and then rises again due to an over-abundance of partial responses. However, if a novel plague, such as the Spanish Flu, reoccurred within an individual’s lifetime, we would expect these trends to become reversed (1).
