After an hour or two of discussing plans, Nick and Adam left the shop, walking to the nearest bus station.
“You seemed a little nervous at the idea of a prom outfit,” Nick said as they sat down, “How come?”
Adam tilted his head from side to side. “Well, uh, prom is mostly...well, for one, I’m home schooled, so I haven’t been to a public school for a while. Also, prom is mostly where boys and girls get together with their date...and I don’t have one.”
Nick chuckled. “Aw, don’t beat yourself up. I’m sure some girl is gonna ask you out soon.”
“Uh...girls are nice, but...I-I don’t like girls like that. You know what I mean?”
Putting two and two together, Nick’s eyes widened. “Oh. Oh! Geez, I’m so sorry, man. I didn’t know. I shouldn’t have jumped to conclusions like that.”
“It’s fine. I never really tell everyone I meet I’m gay unless I know them for a while.” He rubbed his shoulder, “I was honestly nervous about telling you, cause I didn’t want you to feel uncomfortable with me. A-Are you?”
Nick knew so many not straight people in his life that it didn’t bother him. His training partners, Paul and Mike, were currently dating, his neighbors that would babysit Jasmine were married lesbians, and his uncle had dated men and women before he married Abieyuwa. So the idea that he would be even slightly uncomfortable with Adam baffled him.
“Hey,” he said, “I promised that I would help you, and I’m not backing out on it. If you find that guy that can make you smile, I’ll be here rooting for ya.”
A small smile grew on Adam’s face. “Thank you. Really. I still feel a little weird dressing up. I hope they don’t make us start dancing. I can’t dance to save my life.”
“It’s an in and out mission. I don’t think dancing is top on the priority list.”
Thank God for that too, because he couldn’t dance either. Nick still had flashbacks to when he tried to tango with Terri. Several stepped on feet and almost ripping each other’s arms off later, they agreed that he was banned from slow dancing forever.
