‘End food apartheid in Baltimore’: Community protests closing of PriceRite Market

Residents of Pigtown in Baltimore and members of the Peoples Power Assembly and Unemployed Workers Union protested in front of the closed PriceRite Market to demand an end to food deserts and the reopening of a full-service supermarket in the neighborhood.   Participants are planning a citywide protest on Jan. 16 to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy as part of the campaign to end food apartheid in Baltimore.

Food deserts: Grocery giant shuts down in southwest Baltimore

Over the past two years, grocery store closures have rolled across the U.S. like an epidemic. In particular, these closures have occurred in working-class communities, especially where most residents are Black or Brown. These stores close because of corporate greed. There is no better demonstration of this reality than the recently announced closure of a Price Rite Marketplace in the heart of southwest Baltimore.

Saturday, December 17 - 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Mt. Claire Juncture Shopping Center, 1205 W. Pratt St., Baltimore

Hosted by Unemployed Workers Union and Peoples Power Assembly

Join us in a community protest to stop the closing of the PriceRite Market Place and to end food deserts. We will be canvassing the neighborhood beginning at 12 pm and will start the picket at 2 pm.
