1) i've followed you for years and i really enjoy occasionally seeing incomprehensible italian news and attempting to glean meaning from cognates of spanish, the only romance language i understand, so thanx 4 putting it on my dash 2) if you feel up to it could you PLEASE summarize the pompeii thing, I am dying to know (altho i wouldn't blame you if you refused to answer just to preserve the inside joke)
I’m absolutely astonished by this. my italian posts are usually so dependant on context that I’m surprised you actually managed to get anything!
Anyway, no it’s not an entirely inside joke but it’s definitely a ‘we italians are fucking assholes’ kind of situation.
1. it was announced that a food vendor counter was found in pompeii. Said counter had an homophobic insult on it.
2. Said insult is ‘Nicia cineade cacator’ (Nicia inverted shitter) which is basically an insult about Nicia being a bottom because not sure how versed you are in roman history but society was ok with sex between men as long as you were the one giving. Bottoming was shameful.
3. Then these comments happened and italian lgbt tumblr basically lost it at... idk... the whole of it. The concept that we needed proofs that queer people existed in roman times (there’s a lot), the concept that an homophobic insult scribbled on a desk actually means someone’s actually gay (like, idk if people have ever been in public middle school but... dude), the concept that if you were smart enough you could have survived pompeii.....
4. now the memes are about... idk. everything. I haven’t reblogged a lot, if you’ve lived yesterday only through my blog it was but a very small part of it all. but both blogitalianissimo and silenttccries and estperpetua have a several posts about it. Some faves are:
4a. I would also like to point out that bi-icon julius caesar was also accused of being a bottom at some point so he made his way through this whole mess.
4b. Also a lot of jokes about alberto angela, who is a tv science communicator basically our entire nation is in love with. His specialization is ancient rome & pompeii and of course a lot of jokes are about him as well.
5. it bears repeating that we as a community are fucking assholes piling up on that poor person. But at least some of us reached out to the person of the comment to apologize and reassure it’s all in jest
6. to add it all, apparently they found the body of the tavern owner close to it anyway. Who knows if it was Nicia himself.
