Irene hadn’t stopped moving since the scream.

The moment the alarm went up — sharp and warbling through the layers of clinking glasses and too-loud laughter — something in her spine had snapped taut. Like instinct. Like memory. She hadn’t hesitated. Just moved. Quiet. Efficient. Eyes scanning, ears tuned to footsteps, voices, the shift in magic that made the whole room feel like it was exhaling smoke instead of breath.

Someone was dead. Not just anyone.

And the moment the name reached her, carried in broken whispers and panicked glamour, something cold sank behind Irene’s ribs and stayed there.

Now, nearly an hour later, she moved like someone looking for ghosts — not the dead ones, but the living. The ones she’d seen earlier in the evening. Familiar faces. People who mattered.
