“that’s not quite it. it was part of your intentions, but i think what you really wanted was time. when we met, you were selling pills that would quench your thirst so you wouldn’t have to spend time to get something to drink, and you could use those few extra minutes for anything you wanted, like being with a loved one. you know... i think you were always good at your job, miss rue. you just need a little confidence to propose all those ideas for new kinds of medicine i know you have.”

“i-i... how do you know they’ll work?”

“i don’t. but you’ll never know if you don’t try. but who knows, maybe you’ll finally be able to use your secret savings and ask miss seulgi to marry you. you've always had enough sick days saved up to spend time with her, but you just need to make a little more for a perfect wedding, right?”

“wh-what-- did nico come in here and tell you about that when i wasn’t looking??”

“after we escaped on the train, you passed out and wouldn’t wake up, so when we reached the city, an ampharos took us to this pokemon center. i think using your moves really took a toll on you, but i’m glad to see you’re alright now. you really worried me...”

“luca... i’m sorry for making you worry. i feel fine now. in fact, i feel better than i’ve ever been. miss rue, did you make a new kind of medicine to cure me?”

“even with your help, i couldn’t be creative enough to make medicine for legendaries, kid. i gave you your tag back, is all. looks like your friend was right about returning it.”

“oh... oh! my tag! i guess that’s why i can remember you, and the railway switch man nico, and luca... i can remember so much now. ah, but will you be okay without it, miss rue? it really seemed to help you out, and i know seulgi is relying on you...”

“keep it, kid. i think you need it more than i do. i’ll find a way to make things work on my end. now get a little more rest, i’ll be back to check on you one more time and then you’ll be free to go.”

“i have seen many children in my life, but that child was the only one who stopped among the bustle of people, greeted me, and sat and spoke with me even though he must have been in a great hurry like everyone else who has stepped foot on the trains. he is only a child, and yet the way he spoke made it sound like he knew all the answers in the world. i’ve never had any children of my own, but i felt as if i should see to it that that child be safe and cared for even if i never saw him again. there is something different about him this time around, though. something that has gone array. if my hunch is correct, then my friend should give him the help that he needs.”

[nico takes a long drag from his cigarette and pats ciprian on the back.]

“my apologies, young man. i seem to have rambled on again. but surely you have met someone who has made such an impression on you?”
