  A couple of days ago I sat down with the lovely Princess Nyah whose success I have to say speaks for itself. Both in and outside of music it very quickly becomes clear that Princess Nyahs drive is one of a kind. A jack of all trades, Nyah has advocated for international woman’s rights in Parliament and owns a clothing company called Binghi’s Boutique which in its infancy has already been given the opportunity to produce the merchandise for the European leg of J.Colestour and if that isn’t enough Princess Nyah also owns her own record label Royal Tease. The ENTREPRENEURhas just released her new single “Champion” and if you’ve watched the video you can understand the urge to just pack my bags and leave the UK for some pre-uni relaxation.

So you’ve just released the video for your track “Champion” and I’m not gonna lie, where the hell is that place? I want to pack my bags and go now!! *laughs*

Haha, it’s Spain, well I’ve told everybody it’s Spain but it’s actually Ibiza, but what a lot of people don’t know is that in Ibiza you’ve got the party bit and then you’ve got another side to the island which is actually so quiet.

What was the inspiration behind Champion, apart from the obvious?

Champion was born in New York, it was written with Angella Hunt, who’s like an amazing songwriter. Just before that I had just finished promoting an EP called Destroy and Rebuild and I had personally felt like I hit a ceiling, I felt like I was pushing but I wasn’t pushing in any particular direction of progress. I kinda felt like I was burning out . I felt like I was in a relationship with music and it was treating me very badly….So I teamed up with this lady who agreed to help me out and I flew to New York, she sits you down and talks to you like a friend and then goes back and writes a hit, and that’s basically how Champion was born. There are a lot of lines in it that are so fitting, like “we don’t do regrets”.

Why do you think you reached that ceiling?

I think what happened is that I put out music in a very unconventional way, I went  straight to the DJ’s with all my music and funky house was cultivated by the people, people loved funky. So I feel like I was born into a scene that moved itself forward very quickly and everything happened against the grain. So I think with that in mind, post-that, a lot of industry professionals would advise you to do things in another way to get to another level, with that type of pressure, takes the fun and the energy outside of what you want to do. So much pressure about fitting in was applied that after we recorded one song, maybe 15 or 20 times, it just got tiring, the passion was gone, I was like why am I doing this and I feel like my team at the time were pushed to their limits.  I think wipth all that was happening, that’s kinda where I lost my way. So I think in life ultimately you’ve got to follow your heart and gut instinct. It was a great experience for me because now I’ll never do a record that I don’t want to do.

Outside of music in what kind of ways would you say you’re a champion?

I would say probably in my family,  I’m a champion,  like my granddad makes me feel like a champion and he is very honoured to talk about me to people and he makes me feel like I can fight the world and with that I feel like I can win, and even when I lose, I still win because I still learns something and that’s the art of being a true champion,  I’m not trying to be better than anyone else, I’m just trying to better than myself.

What was the inspiration behind branching off into the fashion industry?

I used to work in Footlocker and I’d always notice that people would come and sell their mixtape outside the store every single day and I also noticed that the two for £20 Nike t-shirts were always best sellers all year round, so for me I just felt that fashion and music came hand in hand. So for me having Binghs Boutique is another form of expression, some days I want to write a song, some days I want to write a T-Shirt etc.

Observing your vlogs, you appear to be knowledgeable about different areas of the industry which is key, do you find that you educate yourself or is it something that comes naturally?

No I definitely have to educate myself,  I didn’t go to music school or university, so self-educating is really important to me, because there is so much that I don’t know….and if I don’t know I’ll ask.

So how was working with J. Cole?

It was amazing, he was really cool, he’s very grounded and down to earth  and they’re just very very humble. His manager looked at me and said I really like what you’re doing, you’re not only an artist, I want you to do this and I was like okay I can handle this, then the bill came in and the amount of units that they wanted and I was like okay, ermmmm haha, this is a lot, probably the biggest invoice I’ve had to date. It was a very surreal experience.  The thing for me, is that someone from New York, trusted me with such a major thing and not one person in the UK has trusted me with their merchandising haha, this guy only met me 3 times and was like let Nyah do it.

Does that ever make you want to pack your bags and leave?

Nah I’d never do that, I’m too close to my family and I love London and plus it’s like you can WORK ABROAD and still come home.

Musically who do you rate at the moment?

At the moment I really have a lot of respect for Krept and Konon, I love the fact that they have stayed true to themselves. They’re not trying to do anything, they’re just doing them. I’ve heard a lot of Wretch’s new stuff, which is mindblowing , everyone should bs scared, I’ve been listening to Jhene Aiko’s music quiet a lot and  I think that she’s dope. I listen to a lot of old school music, like Etta James and like Reggae.

What music influences your music?

I love club music, I used to go out and dance to funkyhouse years before it was even popular,, I remember I used to go to this  rave in Hackney Central and they had another room, just a funkyhouse room and literally there would be just about four people in there all night dancing and two of them was me and my friend haha. So for me, it’s to make music that people can dance to, when they go out, they don’t care what they sound like, singing to the best you can sing and you feel like you’re on stage. I get a euphoric feeling when I see people doing that to my music, I get connected to them without them even knowing it, so for me, whatever the genre, be it trap, electronic, dance and so on, because my vision is to perform at a festival.

Is there anyone you don’t rate in the music industry? 

Erm I would say, each to their own, I would say music is very subjective to what you like, like I am not a fan of soca music. I am so with you on that, the only time I can deal with soca music is at Carnival.  I am not a fan, like I said I’ll be walking past those floats. However, it’s subjective to what you like so I can’t really say that there’s anyone I don’t rate, because if they’re there they are doing something right.

Lastly, biggest challenge?

The biggest challenge is my reach, I’m not signed to a label. But I noticed you had a very large fan base.  Yeh you’re right, my fans are dedicated and a lot of my friends in the industry helped me with that and have been very supportive of my music.  But I still feel like there a lot of people that don’t know I exist, like I really want people to know what I’m about. I really want to start a tv show, I feel like I want people to see the hustle and then decide whether they  like what I have to offer.
