No, but, it wouldn’t matter what age or what gender ( remember that one time where Hime was a boy, princessxtsubasa? ) Hime was because he fell in love with her because of her soul, her beautiful soul that warmly accepts everyone and is so strong and courageous. No matter how she looked, he would ALWAYS love her as long as her soul is still the same soul he fell in love with.

     There was something different, and he couldn’t put a finger on what it was exactly. The sand dunes that marked the arrival to Clow County were the same as always, and there didn’t seem to be a storm coming. He looked up at the sky to see the clear, wide BLUES that he associated with walks with his beloved one, small picnic dates where they pretended that they could have an ETERNITY. 

          “Where is everyone?” the swordsman grunted, and he had a sudden rush of knowledge and knew what was wrong ( and something rushed into his throat with a feeling of DENIAL ). 

     It had been five years since they last went to Clow Country ( the gap grew longer and longer as their travelling continued, and it made his heart ACHE ). He was now pushing thirty-five years old, a father of three children ( they first had a son, which they named after Kimihiro, and then twins named after the mage and his brother ), but the last time he saw his beloved one, she was much older than him ( TIME were slipping through their hands even as they tried to WEAVE together, but the world was not KIND to those who B R O K E taboos ). 

          “I think I know,” he stated faintly, and he didn’t need to see the mage’s PITY in his eyes to see that his thoughts were right. The swordsman only looked surprised at the statement before catching the mage’s eyes, and the surprise flickered to a GRIM FROWN. Mokona, who did not yet understand, still jumped onto his shoulder to COMFORT him, and he absently petted his friend as his feet moved on their own. 

     They did not talk, and he didn’t know whether or not it was by design from his travel companions or if they had just reached an unspoken agreement without him noticing. This would not be hard, he knew, since he felt FAINT, as if all he could see was the pure blue sky despite putting one foot in front of the other tirelessly. 

     Finally, they reached their destination, and he didn’t need to read the names to know where her body was buried. He stood in front of her grave, reading the carving again and again ( “Here lies the beautiful queen of Clow Country” and other meaningless drivel that were NOTHING in comparison to what she had been ). 

          “Kid...” he heard lowly before he was cut off ( either by the mage or because he wasn’t sure what to say, he didn’t know nor did he care ). 

     He could dimly feel himself fall onto his knees and reaching out to carve the etchings, feeling as if he was only seven again and watching his beloved one taken in front of him ( this was much worse, SO much worse, because then he could break the taboo to save her and now...there was NO way ). 

     Why wasn’t he here? Why did he have to leave for FIVE years only to see the one he had tried so desperately to protect DEAD. Judging from the age that was written on the tombstone and how old his beloved one was when he left, he hadn’t come back in at least TWENTY years. 

     Was this his curse? His life now? Was this the REAL price for breaking that taboo all those years ago? His beloved one didn’t deserve to fall down with him, and he wanted to scream that if he so needed to pay the price, the HEAVENS should have torn HIM down and left the people he loved alone because this wasn’t fair ( not to her, not to him, not to his children ). 

          “Dad?” 

     He startled when he heard the unfamiliar voice ( he hadn’t realised that the swordsman and the mage had left him to mourn all by himself ), and he turned around to see his eldest son. He was almost stunned to see that his son looked...older; perhaps even older than he was, and he almost wanted to curse the differences of times. 

          “Kimihiro?” he asked, and his son’s surprised look deepened into a look of distaste. 

          “Dad, WHERE THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN? Mum’s been dead for thirty years, and, when I see you again, you’re somehow younger than me?” The words, biting and filled with fury, were obviously words that he wanted to have shared for the longest time. “MUM ALWAYS WAITED FOR YOU, looked for you, kept watching up as if you were going to magically appear, and her LAST WORDS were for YOU, and you weren’t even fucking here to HEAR THEM.” 

     He couldn’t speak, couldn’t move, trapped in place by the words that were spilling unbidden from his son’s mouth ( the same as his TEARS and all he wanted to do was to hug his weeping son but knew that it wouldn’t be ACCEPTED ), and he reached an arm as if to do so, but held it back. 

          “Did you even love her? The way that she did you?” his son asked, his voice in a near whisper, choked by the tears coating his throat, and this gave him the push to respond in turn.

          “I love her. I love her so much that this hurts so badly. I broke the rules of the universe in order to keep your mother alive, but I still never deserve her, and I never will. She deserved better than me, and she always had, but I love her so much.” 

     His son fully broke down and fell to his knees, going into his father’s embrace, and he was stricken with the time that his son had been four years old and was scared of a thunderstorm. He closed his eyes and rubbed his son’s back, even as the tears fell from his own eyes. 

     They didn’t deserve this, but maybe he did.
