“I admit I try very hard not to harbor  thoughts  of  marriage about  those  who I actually care about, especially when it’s so often such an unrealistic dream. But I must say... Prince Albert has made a very  fine  impression on me.   Make  no mistake,   I'm not in love with him--   strange though it may sound. In truth, I barely know the man. But he and I have a great  deal  in  common.  We’re two mild souls caught up in the tumult of a machine much  larger  than  ourselves,  and Albert--  bless  his  heart--  is so passionate about using his position to help the common class. A long time ago  I  gave up hope that any good could ever come of my ascension to the  throne;  I  truly  convinced myself  that I could never be happy, and I could never possibly bring happiness to others.

“Albert has such a fire inside of him that I think he could  do great good given  the  opportunity.   I’m not in love with him but-- I think I could be in terrible danger of falling.”

“Keep in mind, he must not ever,  ever  know  that  I would consider such a thing. I would never act on it and he-- well, I can’t imagine that the thought has ever crossed his  mind. And perhaps that’s for the best.  He’s such a sensitive soul, I suspect he would be mortified.

           elisabeth keeps her voice soft as she caresses her infant daughter’s hands. sophie (thankfully) has not cried out for the archduchess, a fact that sisi rejoices in & savors. this is the first time in weeks that she has been able to get her own child to herself.
