Personal Post ahead!
My heart was called to education as a young girl helping my teacher mom set up her classroom every year. In 2001 I started my own journey as a music teacher, in 2008 I added art to my repertoire, and in 2016 got my Masters in Music Ed. Then, I felt the gentle nudge of the Lord to move into leadership in the fall of 2019. In the span of 11 months, I went from teacher, to assistant principal, to interim principal, to principal. My first week as interim was the first week of the Covid pandemic, and my initiation into principalship was a trial by very hot fire. To say I felt inadequate and under equipped is the biggest understatement of the century. Last week marked my fourth year as middle school principal. Two years ago I made the commitment to be a better leader for my teachers and for my students and their families. Y'all, it was HARD. Working full time, momming full time, wifing full time and getting an advanced degree is HARD. Many sleepless nights, late nights, tears, triumphs, and saying “no” to things I wanted to do to make room for what I needed to do.
This weekend and this summer, my 2 year journey to my Masters in Educational Leadership, Curriculum and Supervision at the University of Oklahoma will conclude. I will have my degree in hand at the end of this summer. What a journey this has been, and my family came with me to celebrate and sit through 2 hours of commencement to scream and cheer me on as I walked. I am so thankful for them.
