Have y'all ever heard of an artist in the US who uses ISO sizing for their art? Because of my paper being non-domestic, I work a lot at JIS B4, A3-A6 sizes, and wonder if this would cause problems for buyers. I figure I can list the size (A4, for example), then the size in inches below, but I'm not sure if people do this. I want to offer prints of my work close to the original sizes, and worry people may not buy them if they're not in US sizes. Any thoughts?

Kiriska: Yes, some US artists do this, especially if they are based internationally. 

Personally, I don’t like it and recommend against it, but whether it deters buyers really depends on whether your target demographic and typical buyer is the sort that wants to frame art. If they’re mostly college students taping posters up on dorm room walls, size probably isn’t a big deal. 

If they’re a bit older and more likely to want to frame work, then I know from personal experience that trying to get international size frames is a huge pain in the ass, and I am personally less likely to buy something if it isn’t in a standard size, especially if it’s a large piece. Smaller pieces, at least, can be matted at a lower cost.

It may also depend on the type of work you do. There are obviously many exceptions, but the more “fine art” your work is, the more likely a potential buyer is going to want to frame it, and the more important standard sizing is to that effect.

I understand commonly offered print sizes (11x17, letter, postcard), and the average recommendation of 5-10 prints per piece of art... my remaining question: How to best distribute that number throughout the size options, i.e. ratio: how many mini posters vs letter-size vs small? Nattosoup:  This differs by artist.  Larger print sizes, like 8x10, 11x17, don’t sell for me, only mini prints work, however Heidi and Kiriska sell larger sizes frequently.  This is usually a case by case basis, and experimentation will help you figure out what works for you.

Kiriska: I think this is something you'll need to experiment on your own with as I feel it's something that's highly dependent on the type of work you do and personal preferences. 

I offer prints in 11x17, 8.5x11, and 4x6, but I do not offer the same design across multiple sizes.

Because I work primarily in traditional media, the designs I put on 11x17 and 8.5x11 usually correspond to what size the original is. A drawing I did on 11x17 paper becomes an 11x17 print. The ratios are different for 11x17 to 8.5x11 to 4x6 and I don't like readjusting art to fit on these different aspect ratios very much. 

How many designs of each size I have is entirely dependent on what types of pieces I feel like drawing. I don't really think about things in terms of "do I have too many 8.5x11 pieces compared to 11x17?" -- it's more "I want to draw a big six-winged dragon and that probably will look better on a bigger 11x17 than a 8.5x11 because wings take up SO MUCH SPACE LOL."

My 4x6 prints are almost exclusively my bird prints. I don't make bigger sizes of the bird prints because I have so many and don't want them to overrun my entire table/display and also because they're much simpler pieces compared to my other work, so I think they look better smaller.

Everything I've described so far is pretty much personal preference though. In addition to the above, I don't print the same design across multiple sizes because it makes keeping stock/inventory/judging how well something is doing a lot harder in my opinion.

Do you think sets of prints would sell better if they were smaller size (like postcards as opposed to medium prints) since the price for buying the whole set would be less? Or would the print size be completely irrelevant?

Kiriska: The dreaded answer: “it depends.”

Things to consider:

Is the art better suited for a larger size? If you’re making really intricate pieces with tons of detail, it probably looks way better in a larger size, and even if it’s cheaper for a customer to get them smaller, if they can’t see all the detail, what’s the point? Cheaper may not always be an incentive either – I get asked if my stuff is available bigger as often as I get asked if it’s available smaller.

How many pieces are in the set? If it’s a set of 3 prints, it may still be worth it to people to get them bigger. If it’s a set of 6 or 9 or whatever, space is probably more of an issue.

Are you only selling them as sets? If you’re still selling them individually, I definitely recommend opting for the size that better suits your work. Sometimes people don’t care if you intended stuff to be a set/paired together and just want one or two of the set. I have a lot of pieces that are meant to be diptychs or triptychs – a vast majority of the time they are not purchased as such. Sets are cool, but people like their flexibility.

Nattosoup:  I only sell prints as 4X6 mini prints, so perhaps I can answer this too!

For me, larger print sizes have never sold- not fanart, not original art, just nope.  My table is full of tiny, cute things, or comics about tiny, cute people, and big prints stood out like a sore thumb.  I started offering my dino buttons as mini prints after many, many dino loving kids requested a print option for their walls, and slowly started adding other print options to the roster.  My mini prints are a mix of fanart and original art that includes images of the main character of my comic, Kara, beautiful watercolor illustrations I’ve completed, and loads of cute chibi art.  While prints aren’t a huge seller at $2 a pop (or as marked in sets), they’re a steady seller that allows me to sell art to people who can’t afford my originals or my commissions. 

Mini prints are an easy way to test out the market too- wait until Snapfish, Shutterfly, or Amazon print services has a sale, and dip a toe in the water.

hello! sorry for the silly question, but i was wondering what the difference was between tabloid prints and letter prints? i saw someone using those terms before, but they never specified the differences. thank you in advance!

Kiriska: “Letter” and “tabloid” refer to different sizes. Letter size is 8.5″x11″. Tabloid size is 11″x17″. :)
