Title: Following the Fashion Creator: James Gillray (1757-08-13 -- 1815-06-01) Creation Date: 1830 (Reprint) Provenance: Germany Institution: Kunstbibliothek, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin Type: Caricature - print 19th century , Fashion Print Medium: material: paper, lithograph Rights: Dietmar Katz Kunstbibliothek, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin
Prolific British caricaturist James Gillray had an extensive body of work that reached all classes, this print demonstrates how fashion played an integral role in his political commentary. Here, both womens’ exaggerated adornments portray radically different body shapes oddly fitting into the same dress. Notice how the tall woman confidently flaunts her oversized feathers and accessories while the other, despite being dressed similarly, glares at her with an air of envy. This interaction between the women mirrors international exchanges involving fashion trends, while claiming to be distinctive most trends seem to be referential. Regardless of how similar their goals, undertones of disdain and superiority reign.
