The starting point for this two-part catalog is the collection of 'Sits and printed cotton from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries' of the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden. This is actually the exhibition catalog, part 1. This shiny, hand-painted cotton fabric from India was used extensively in clothing and interiors in Friesland. It describes how the east-west relationship influenced the development of the motifs and how sit and European printed cotton were used in these periods in Friesland for men's, women's, children's and puppet wear and interiors. The Hindeloper costume receives special attention. Painting techniques used for the site are treated. This self-contained book contains drawings, photos (color and black-and-white), a glossary and a literature assignment. Cover shows in color a detail of a piece sits.
