The stock figure of the “anarchist” is a bomb-thrower or assassin, but political scientist Kathy E. Ferguson argues it should be a printer.

With commercial print shops often refusing anarchist material—anarchists were fiercely repressed—anarchists needed their own printers and presses. Through writing and printing, anarchists “could practice what they preached, creating the society for which they longed through the process of calling for it,” writes Ferguson.

Dear LetterWrite,

Today’s topic of interest to me is fandoms, and I’m sorry in advance, LetterWrite, if this gets to be strange. When I think of a fandom, I think of things like huge masses of human beings coming together to scream at each other about the things they love with as much passion and fury as a pack of wild wendigos. I realize that this isn’t necessarily what a fandom is, but that’s the image I get in my head. Is it true that everyone is in a fandom of some kind? And can a fandom be something that isn’t really on an electronic, like a group of people who just really, really appreciate printing presses? Understand, LetterWrite, that this comes not just from my curiosity, but from that small part of my mind that thinks everything is weird, like appreciating printing presses to an extreme extent.

There are so many fandoms out there, I wonder, is there a limit? Can the human mind ever get to a point at which it can’t like anything else? I ask you, what kind of fandom are you aware of? And is there any that you would think is weird to others? Again, thank you for being patient, and have a great, freaky life.
