Typography prints

Following on from my Barbara Kruger inspired photo set, I decided to do something similar to that, but physically rather than digitally.

I printed off my photos and used markers and paint to add text to them. Originally I was going to do all the text in red, similar to Barbara Kruger’s pieces that are solely in black, white and red. However after finishing the first one in just red, I felt like experimenting with different colours.

I’m really happy with how they turned out and am glad that I experimented with other colours.

Printmaking Elective

Experimenting with patterns and reversing things.

These are the isolated gradient layers from my travel posters for Nashville and Limerick. When flipped on the horizontal axis (the third and fourth images) and without the lineart it becomes difficult to tell immediately which way was intended to be upright, which gives more freedom to print it in different directions and see what new combinations can be made from the geometric patterns. All together I think the four of them also make an interesting image with the main gradient reversing away from the center.

(These are some experiments with mark making that I forgot to post from my drafts😅)

These were some mark making experiments I did in response to Eoin’s video on mark making tools and mediums.

I really liked the outcome frok using string. It’s something I always see in videos on Instagram and TikTok and I really enjoyed. I’d like to be able to incorporate the string painting into my project somehow.

Stamp making

Today I began to make my own stamps following Suzannah’s demonstration on Monday.

For this, I used an old Vaseline tin as the block and foam as the stamp

I really enjoyed the process and have already come up with an idea for a piece that incorporates this practice into it😊

I hope to explore it a bit more during the weekend when I have time.

Printmaking Elective

Continuing with my working with the skylines of Limerick and Nashville, I tried my hand at making travel posters for both destinations. I’ve included images with and without the gradient colors to show how it might look after being done with a lino/woodblock carving first, and then the colors could either be stamped onto the paper prior to printing or perhaps done in watercolor afterwards, working in layers.

Printmaking Elective - pt. 2

A companion piece to the print of the Nashville skyline (post here), this is an interpretation of the Limerick skyline using the exact same tools and color palette.

As my strips of cardboard began to soak up some of the water from brushing the paint onto them it was easier to soak them through and use the extra bit of water to create a wash which resulted in more solid blocks of gray for the main shapes of the buildings, which was an effect that I had wanted in the first piece and couldn't achieve. The next time I try something like this I'll experiment with the difference between dry cardboard and damp to see the various effects I can get with each tool.

Painting Process pt.3

This is the final part of my painting process.

I added text by using cut outs from newspaper. I used the words “stuck” and “trapped”. This helps to incorporate my print elective with my paint elective through the use of this collage technique.
