when i first watched this one, i was struck. parajanov's camera had been static in colour of pomegranates or legend of the suram fortress, creating sublime tableaux which were subtly glistening with moving parts —animals, repeated gestural rituals, actors or props on strings...

in shadows of forgotten ancestors it takes on a more active role. it constantly pans and arcs around its subjects, episodically switching from colour to b&w, moving and evolving to capture the flurry of emotions but also the weight of destiny in this shakespearian eastern european tale of star-crossed lovers, jealousy and revenge.
