Have you heard about the Michael Thompson case? I can’t stop thinking about it right now. A 68 year old Black man named Michael Thompson is serving 60 years in a Michigan prison for selling weed. 60 YEARS FOR SELLING WEED. This plant. This plant that I, a white woman, grows legally in my backyard in Suburbia, USA without a care to be had. Do you see the problem here? That makes it a life sentence for him. He has never committed a violent act, but he was charged with a violent crime just so he could serve the longest sentence possible. Michael was labeled violent because police found guns at his house, even though in the state of Michigan people can legally and openly carry guns. He didn’t even have a gun on him when he sold weed to the informant, but he is serving a 60 year sentence anyway. Michael has spent 25 years in prison and during that time he’s had a perfect record. Michael has been serving a longer sentence than any non violent offender in the state of Michigan – FOR WEED. In 2018, Michigan voters chose to legalize recreational weed. Now it’s 2020 and weed is legal in Michigan and Michael has literally spent nearly half of his life in prison for selling weed which is now legal in the very same state he is doing time in. It has cost the state of Michigan over a million dollars to keep him there and for what? Why? It’s one of the most insane cases of injustice going on in the country right now. For a man to spend his 40s - 60s & beyond in prison for selling weed, it’s abusive, it’s wrong, it makes no sense, and it’s just flat out bullshit. Now more than ever, being almost 70 and a Type 2 Diabetic at high risk for COVID, Michael needs to be freed and he needs as many people to help him as humanly possible.
