Masterlist of Memes: ✧ our muses having dinner together
Encased in silence, the two Rowe brothers sat awkwardly on either side of the booth, their noses buried in their menus and their gazes anywhere but on the other. They'd sat like that for a good twenty minutes since arriving, though the awkward silence had begun when they'd gotten in the car together to come to the restaurant.
It had been strange when Reggie had requested Delsin's presence at dinner, but the conduit had gone along with it even though there was more than likely some underlying reason, like he was in trouble again. But they'd gotten into the car and driven to the single diner in Salmon Bay, had gotten to their booth and had sat down to a meal of tension and silence that drove both of them crazy.
Tensely waiting for his brother to say something, Delsin cringes slightly when the officer clears his throat and puts his menu down. After a moment he follows suit and swallows, forcing an uneasy grin onto his features.
"You probably think you're in trouble," Reggie began, and the conduit found himself holding his breath. "But you're not." The man finished with a curt nod to show is assurance, and his brother sighed. That was good; it might not turn out as bad as he thought... and then the officer began to speak again, his hands folded before him on the table. "But we do need to talk."
"Yeah?" The Akomish responded, meeting his brother's gaze steadily, as if trying to fathom the topic that they were meant to converse about by reading his mind. As expected, no result came, and after a moment of awkward staring the conduit was forced to look away.
"It's... been several years since mom and dad died, Delsin." Reggie began slowly, and immediately his brother's gaze dropped to the table top; their parents were a sore subject, but even so Delsin nodded for him to continue. "And I realize we haven't been very close over those years." A pause, a breath, two traded glances. "So I've been thinking-"
He's cut off by the approach of a waiter, who nods to them. After an awkward pause they take their orders and the man leaves, leaving them to silence once more. They don't look at each other, but the tension in each of them is obvious to the other; they didn't do this very often, so it was expected. "Uh, where was I?"
"You've been thinking...?" The native american supplied, sneaking a glance at his brother, who nodded then continued to speak.
"I've been thinking, and saving up some money, and... well, do you remember that cabin we used to stay in sometimes during the summer?" Reggie asked, looking to his brother, who looked back, stunned.
"You didn't." Delsin said, and his brother smiled. Like, genuinely smiled, which made Delsin grin back. "You didn't." He repeated. After a moment Reggie nodded, and the conduit laughed excitedly. "You did! Are you serious? We're going up to the cabin?"
"Just for four days, but I thought we could use some bonding time, you know? It'll be nice, just the two of us, away from the city; I thought you'd like it." The officer shrugged with a sheepish smile, and the conduit shook his head in disbelief.
"Like it? I love the idea! You're awesome, bro." Delsin said, and just then their food arrived. For the rest of the dinner they ate casually, joking back and forth like brothers did, talking about their plans... and for the first time in forever, they felt like a family again.
