hello everyone!

i was wondering if anyone has any experience with going private for surgery? i am currently waiting for another surgery and it’s going to be years before i can get it done.

a few people have suggested fundraising to go private and i’m not well enough informed to make a decision as of yet.

i can get an appointment to speak to the doctor who’s been recommended to me as early as the 1st may, but it’s a £300 for the consultation, and then £4135 for the actual surgery.

obviously i don’t have this lying around, and would either need to get a hefty loan or consider the fundraising route.

under the cut i’m sharing a photo of my pain relief prescriptions to give you an idea of how bad my periods are and how i’m relying on morphine to get me through each one.

if it possible to get private top surgery without being on testosterone? and if so, what are the options for surgeons (i know one popular one stopped doing top surgery last year? if i remember correctly), how would I go about getting it done (I'm not with any gender clinics at all right now or in the past), and what are approximate costs?

Yes, it’s absolutely possible to do this. There are lots of surgeons operating privately in the UK, and this post might be a starting point for looking into your options.

Process: you will generally need to get a referral from a gender clinic, either private or NHS. If you’re only looking for top surgery and can afford to pay privately, your quickest option by far is a private gender clinic - see here for more information on this.

Cost: this really varies by surgeon, but you’re normally looking at £2-300 for the referral, and then surgery and associated costs can be anything from £6,000 - £8,000 in the UK.

I should mention for the benefit of anyone else reading this that the surgeon you’re thinking of is Andrew Yelland: he used to operate both privately and via the NHS, but he had problems renewing his NHS contract last year, so currently only works privately. He may be able to accept NHS referrals again later this year, though.

To the best of my knowledge, yes. You can generally use an NHS referral for surgery with a private surgeon, but not the other way around.

I'm going privately with top surgery with Mr Yelland, I had enough for surgery but my car broke down and had to eat into savings to get new car, I was wondering if anyone can recommend any medical loans people have used?? Thanks

I know Nuffield does medical loans that are interest-free, but haven’t used them personally.

hi, I got referred to the GIC in march 2019 but can't bear the wait anymore and am looking to get top surgery privately. my dysphoria is "documented" in that it was mentioned in my referral letter to the GIC (of which I don't have a copy), but afaik I don't have any other "diagnosis". am I going to get stuck in an endless referral loop again or can I just go to a surgeon and be like "please yeet my tits, here's £7k"?

Im thinking of going private for top surgery. what path would I take to get there (like do I need so see a GIC first? for how many appointments? what's the waiting time like? I'm thinking of the one with Drs seal and Lorimer I can't remember what it's called) and once I've been referred for surgery how long will it take and how much will it cost? tl;dr: what is the total time between now and surgery, and how much does it cost in total?

To get a private referral for top surgery, the quickest route is to go via a private gender clinic. There’s some information on private clinics on this page, and for information on Gendercare specifically (the network Drs Lorimer and Seal work within), see their FAQ.

How many appointments you will need depends on the clinic you see and the specifics of your situation, but you should plan for two.

Waiting times for gender clinic appointments and surgery are really variable as they depend on the waiting list of the specific clinicians/surgeons you see, but at a very rough estimate you’re likely looking at around 6 months from contacting the private clinic to having a surgery referral sorted, and then another 6 months for surgery itself (some surgeons do have much shorter private waiting lists, however). Before you get referred, you’re going to have to have chosen your surgeon, so that’s something you should start looking into if you haven’t already.

As for cost, that also varies by surgeon. The referral appointments will likely be around £4-500, and surgery in the UK is roughly £6-8,000 (but you should check with your surgeon for precise costs because they do vary.

I had top Surgery privately with Dr Yelland earlier this year, I would like a nipple revision I was wondering how much more that would cost ?? I can’t get through to his secretary atm. Thankyou

As far as I know, when going privately with Yelland, revisions within a year of the original surgery won’t cost you anything extra. You should definitely keep trying to contact his office for the most specific and up to date information, though.

Hey I'm getting t privately with gendercare and trying to weigh up whether I should go private for top surgery too or just wait for NHS, so I was wondering if you know if any surgeons offer a payment plan or if you have to pay it all at once?

You might find it helpful to look through previous messages we’ve had/answered about payment plans. You could also speculatively contact some of the surgeons you might be interested in, as they will have the most up to date information for you.
